The duo, who met at a restaurant in 1988, celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary in May 2026. It is worth mentioning that Sylvester and Jennifer’s relationship has gone through many ups and downs. Now, in an interview, Sylvester opened up about how his wife, Jennifer Flavin, taught him to love after years of struggling with relationships.
In a recent conversation with Tracy Smith for CBS Sunday Morning at 92NY, Sylvester shared that the one thing that he would like to change about his life is marrying Jennifer Flavin earlier. He called himself an idiot who kept delaying marriage because he did not understand relationships well at that time. He directly addressed his wife and said he was sorry. He said:
"I wish I’d married my wife about eight years earlier. I was like such an idiot, procrastinating. Because, you know, I’m still actually learning about relationships that bad. Uh, so I regret that."
Sylvester admitted that the lack of love he experienced from his parents during his childhood days had a partial impact on his understanding of relationships. He explained that experiences during childhood can leave lasting emotional marks. The 80-year-old actor added that Jennifer taught him how to love. He said:
"It’s a habit, you know, learning to love a really wonderful habit. And with my wife, Jennifer, it’s finally come to fruition. It took about 60 years, but we got there."
Sylvester and Jennifer first met by chance while dining at a West Hollywood restaurant in 1988, and sparks immediately flew. At the time, Jennifer was 19. They confirmed their romance in 1990. However, their relationship hit a rough patch in 1994, when Sylvester called it quits with Jennifer and went on to have an affair with Janice Dickinson.
At the time, Jennifer told PEOPLE that Sylvester had sent him a six-page handwritten letter telling her about the breakup. Jennifer was very disappointed and hurt because she felt that after six years together, Sylvester should have spoken to her in person instead of ending the relationship through a letter. She clarified that she was not planning to beg him to come back and simply wanted the chance to talk to him and understand what had happened.
The breakup came as a huge shock to Jennifer as they were planning their future together at that time. In fact, they were also planning to have children. Later, they reconciled after ending things with Janice. They began dating again, and later on May 17, 1997, Jennifer and Sylvester got married in a civil ceremony at The Dorchester Hotel in London, followed by a ceremony at Blenheim Palace.
A year before their wedding, the duo became parents to their first child, a daughter, Sophia Rose. A year after their marriage, Jennifer and Sylvester welcomed their second daughter, Sistine Rose, followed by the birth of their third daughter, Scarlet Rose, in 2002. Things were going well until 2022. After Jennifer and Sylvester had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary, the former filed for divorce.
In her filing, Jennifer accused Sylvester of intentionally using up, reducing, or wasting their shared marital money and property. However, Sylvester denied the accusation. About a month later, the couple decided not to go ahead with the divorce. According to a representative for Sylvester who spoke to Page Six, the couple met at home, talked about their problems, and managed to resolve their differences.
