In the first episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the audience gets to see the reunion of 'Stuart Bloom' (played by Kevin Sussman), his ex-girlfriend, 'Denise' (played by Lauren Lapkus), geologist 'Bert Kibbler' (played by Brian Posehn) and an alternate-universe version of the Caltech astrophysicist, 'Raj Koothrappali' (played by Kunal Nayyar). In this alternate universe, 'Raj' figured out how to repair the quantum machine that broke reality into many different universes.
As 'Raj' tries to explain the solution to 'Stuart' and 'Denise', he gets killed by 'Barry Kripke' (played by John Ross Bowie). 'Barry' shoots and kills 'Raj' because he has become the ruler of Caltech and the surrounding area in this universe, and if the quantum machine is made, 'Barry' would lose his power and go back to being an ordinary scientist. So he kills 'Raj' to stop that from happening. As a result, 'Stuart' and 'Denise' are left with incomplete instructions to repair the machine.
After 'Raj's' death, 'Stuart' and 'Denise' try to use the quantum machine by following its instruction manual. But due to incomplete instructions to repair the machine, 'Denise' skips an important step. Consequently, the machine fails to restore reality and instead malfunctions. After the malfunction, 'Stuart', 'Bert', and 'Barry' end up in another universe and 'Denise' stays in the post-apocalyptic reality.
When 'Stuart' reaches the new universe, everything looks normal at first. But in the final scene, the audience notices that everyone has a glowing green implant on the back of their neck. But 'Stuart' and 'Bert' don’t even notice them. This twist suggests that some looming danger is awaiting 'Stuart' and 'Barry' in the new universe.
