'Stranger Things' Season 5, Duffer Brothers Hint At Who Might Die In The Finale, 'A Red Wedding..'

'Stranger Things' Season 5, Volume 2, is finally here, and fans have been binge-watching the series with absolute awe blended with the fear of saying goodbye to their favourite characters.

Stranger Things has become the most-streamed show globally in 2025. Fans have been rooting for their favourite characters, and so far, 'Steve Harrington' has emerged as the favourite 'we will riot if you kill him' character. However, the viewers are not ready to see any of their OGs die. Nonetheless, the Duffer Brothers have come back with a warning for what the show's big finale might lead to. Regardless, one thing is for sure: whatever the Stranger Things team has planned for the final episode, we are not ready for it.

Duffer Brothers on the death in the Stranger Things Season 5 finale

We are one episode away from learning how the much-loved Netflix series, Stranger Things, will end. Well, the minds behind the show, the Duffer Brothers, recently sat down with TODAY and reflected on what fans can expect from the upcoming finale. Over the past five seasons, the show has seen several tragic deaths, including 'Barbara (Barb) Holland', 'Bob Newby', and 'Eddie Munson'.

Ahead of the Season 5 finale, creators, Matt and Ross Duffer address fan speculations that characters will die. For the unversed, so far, no main character has been sacrificed. However, they are now headed into a very dangerous battle with 'Vecna'. While Matt stated that they're "not doing anything for shock value," he did say that it would be easier to talk about once the finale was out. Ross further added:

"Oh, man... I don't know what I would say to them. I mean, obviously, it's (an) emotional ending to the show for a variety of factors. But I don't want to say too much. I want people to brace themselves as they go into the finale. But I can promise you it's not a 'Red Wedding' situation, like from 'Game of Thrones.' We're not gonna wipe out eight of our characters."

Duffer Brothers on speculations around 'Steve Harrington's' death in Stranger Things Season 5

Amid the chatter around 'Steve Harrington' losing his life in Stranger Things Season 5. The cast has weighed in on some fan theories, with Maya Hawke telling the Hollywood Reporter that she's seen fans say they'll be heartbroken if 'Steve' dies. To Millie Bobby Brown poking fun at the theory and saying, "What if it was just the death of his hair? Papa comes back, shaves his hair off. Steve's the new Eleven and actually a huge, major character death is Steve Harrington's hair."

However, when asked for their opinion on what will happen and how they want the fans to feel after the series is over, the Duffer Brothers' reaction was pretty tightly vocalised. For the unversed, the series finale will air on Netflix and in movie theaters on December 31, 2025. In a conversation with TODAY, the Duffer brothers explained they are not certain how the audience will react. Matt Duffer was quoted as saying:

"It's hard to know. I'm really curious to see how they react. I'm not entirely sure. I'm imagining they're gonna feel something like we felt and the cast felt, which is this really confusing mix of emotions."

They concluded by sharing that they hope that the ending feels "inevitable" and that it's "the right ending and the right time to be ending the story, and they'll understand that." The Duffer brothers also noted that there's something also "very sad and bittersweet" about saying goodbye to the characters, especially in this particular storyline. They hoped there was some satisfaction amid "a big bag of emotions." Matt further stated:

"At least that's based on our experience ... with the finale and the cast experience."
