Hylands enjoyed a long career across film, TV and theatre, and was widely recognised for playing 'Detective Kevin O’Brien' in the 1980s series Night Heat, along with roles in Fargo, The X-Files, and NYPD Blue. Outside the entertainment industry, he also had a family. Scott was married to Veronica Hylands, and they had two children, Luke and Rebecca.
For the unversed, Veronica Hylands pursued a career as a nurse. Scott Hylands and his wife’s first dinner happened at 3 a.m., which Scott referred to as his “lunch hour.” Veronica had just come off a difficult shift since a child on her ward had died and she couldn’t sleep. Scott called Veronica at 2 a.m. after meeting her in a lobby.
A few minutes later, she was up, showering and washing her hair. That late-night meeting led to more dates, and eventually Scott invited her to his home. Veronica recalled being stunned by the place. She said it felt like stepping into an Art Deco magazine, and that even the kitchen had a theatrical feel.
With a 22-year age difference between them, they had doubts. They broke things off for about a month before deciding to get married. They approached marriage deliberately. Scott had seen how often actors’ marriages didn’t last and how many children grew up without their fathers.
Veronica agreed to pause her nursing career so the family could stay together as much as possible. On longer shoots, the family typically joined Scott. They spent time in Calgary, Edmonton, Miami, and the Bahamas while he worked on the CBC series, The Scales of Justice.
Veronica found being around the film world eye-opening. She noted that some people were very friendly while others struck her as snobs. She was also surprised by how often women flirted with Scott, even when she was right there. She remembered one elevator ride after a wrap party in the Bahamas when an aspiring actress in a revealing outfit made a very forward remark to him.
At the same time, she said some of those women became good friends, and it was nice to connect with others who lived a similar lifestyle. Veronica also got attracted to watching television at the same time. After meeting Scott, she made a point to watch Night Heat and admitted she would get goosebumps whenever his character appeared.
Back in 2021, Scott Hylands was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, also called AML. Notably, Veronica launched a GoFundMe page at that time to seek help. The page is not active anymore. Scott had to undergo chemotherapy to fight the health issue, and it was only possible with a drug called Venclexta, reportedly priced between USD 60,000 and USD 80,000.
In a November 2021 interview, Veronica Hylands confirmed that the first shipment of Venclexta was on its way. She said it was being called a miracle drug, and explained that when combined with chemotherapy, Venclexta could improve the prognosis dramatically.
According to Veronica, Scott Hylands had always been the healthiest person she knew. She described the situation as completely overwhelming for their family. Despite Scott’s television success a generation earlier, Veronica noted that he was, like many Canadian actors, a working journeyman.
During her interview, Veronica wanted people to understand they wouldn’t be asking for help if they didn’t need it. It was unfamiliar territory for them. The Hylands had always given to charities like SickKids Hospital and B.C. Kids. Veronica said they had never had to ask anyone for a penny before, and that they were only doing this because the drug showed so much promise. She also said they were getting by because of people’s kindness, with support coming in from people they hadn’t spoken to in 30 years.
Veronica mentioned that the response from Scott’s former castmates had been wonderful. Some of them had been kids when they worked on the show and hadn’t really spoken to him then, but they were contributing out of respect. Veronica believed it was because Scott had always treated everyone equally.
