Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt was arrested in 1993 in connection with the Mumbai blast. It is still one of the most dreaded chapters of his life. Though Sanjay was eventually cleared of terrorism and conspiracy, he was found guilty under the Arms Act for keeping illegal weapons. The actor completed his sentence in 2016.

Sanjay Dutt’s arrest in the 1993 Mumbai blast was one of the toughest moments for his father, Sunil Dutt. Former IPS officer Rakesh Maria, who was part of the investigation, once recalled the incident in an interview with Desi Studios. Rakesh Maria revealed that after learning of Sanjay’s involvement in the case, he arrested the actor for interrogation.

When Sanjay told him that he was innocent and knew nothing about the case, Rakesh lost his cool. Sanjay soon broke down into tears and accepted his mistake. He asked Rakesh not to tell his father, Sunil Dutt. To this, Maria told Sanjay that he would have to inform his father about the crime, and the IPS officer asked Sanjay to own up to his mistake.

However, when Sanjay met his father, he was heartbroken and couldn’t control his emotions. Recalling the moment, Rakesh Maria said:

“Sanjay Dutt is brought into the room, he sees his father, he howls like a child and goes and falls down at Sunil Dutt’s feet and tells him ‘Papa galti ho gayi mere se’. I wouldn’t wish this on any father. Sunil’s face went pale.”

In a recent conversation with Lallantop, prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who played a major part in Dutt’s imprisonment, spoke about the case. Nikam stated that he faced intense criticism throughout Sanjay’s trial due to his sympathetic public image. In the conversation, Nikam stated that whenever Sanjay broke down in tears, the blame was placed on him, and the actor received a lot of sympathy from the public.

Further in the conversation, Nikam said he strongly opposed granting Sanjay Dutt relief under the Probation of Offenders Act. He argued that the actor should be sentenced to seven years under the Arms Act. Nikam recalled that during the trial, Sanjay was trembling. Further stating how Sanjay’s emotions got out of hand, the prosecutor said:

“When the judgment was delivered, he was trembling. He kept saying, 'No sir, I didn't do anything wrong, sir. I will come back.' He was virtually shaking. I was standing nearby and told him, 'Sanju, the media is watching, please stand straight.' Then I asked the police to take him away. Had I not motivated him at that moment, the media would have made me the villain.”

The Supreme Court later sentenced Sanjay Dutt to five years in prison in 2013 instead of the seven-year sentence sought by the prosecution. He completed his prison sentence in 2016 after serving time for an offence under the Arms Act. After that, he made a comeback and has since worked on several films.
