Rani Mukerji Was Upset When Her Voice Was Dubbed For Ghulam, Aamir Told Her, 'Your Voice Is Not Apt'

Rani Mukerji was upset after her voice was dubbed for Ghulam

Rani Mukerji, who is known for her husky voice, faced a little hiccup at the beginning of her career due to her voice. When Rani was cast opposite superstar Aamir Khan in Ghulam, she was over the moon because she was a huge fan of Aamir. But while filming Ghulam, the makers decided that Rani’s voice had to be dubbed, and the decision left her heartbroken.

During a discussion with Karan Johar about her initial days in Bollywood, Rani recalled the incident and revealed that it was Aamir Khan who told her that her voice would be dubbed. Recalling the same, Rani said that as a newcomer, she hardly had any other choice. In her words:

“I think as a newcomer you don't have much of a choice because it was a really big thing for me to be able to do a film opposite Aamir because he was one of the superstars then.”

In the same interaction, Rani Mukerji shared that Vikram Bhatt, Mukesh Bhatt, and Aamir Khan made the decision together, but the actor was made the bad cop. Rani revealed that Aamir told her, ‘Your voice is not apt for the character or the role’. Though she was really upset, Aamir convinced her.

Rani recalled Aamir’s vicious words and realized that, as an actress, she was responsible for the film's overall success. Elaborating on Aamir’s advice, Rani said:

“He (Aamir) gave an example of how Sridevi's voice was dubbed in a lot of her films. But it didn't stop her from being the star that she became. So with that logic, he said, 'Rani, you must surrender to whatever is best for the film and we think that your voice should be dubbed.' "And it was a little upsetting for me. But obviously I couldn't show the fact that I was upset because you need to be a team player whenever you're part of a film.”

During the conversation, Rani revealed that it was Karan (Johar) who retained her voice in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which was released in the same year. Rani became emotional during the conversation and thanked Karan for retaining her original voice, as he loved it. Soon after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Rani Mukerji’s voice became a sensation as people thought that her husky voice was her unique identity.

Daughter of late filmmaker Ram Mukherjee and playback singer Krishna Mukherjee, Rani never wanted to be an actress.
