After years of speculation, Ram Gopal Varma recently addressed the affair rumours with Urmila Matondkar.
Urmila Matondkar has always been a known face in the entertainment industry since she started featuring in films as a child actress. However, with Ram Gopal Varma's 1995 cult-classic film, Rangeela, she established herself as one of the most coveted heroines of the time. The actress and director duo went on to work together on three more films. However, this professional bond raised suspicions about an alleged romantic link-up. After many years, Ram Gopal Varma recently opened up about the affair rumours with Urmila Matondkar.
In a recent interview with Zoom, Ram Gopal Varma opened up about how, after working with Urmila Matondkar on four films, people started spreading rumours about an alleged affair. The Satya director shared that he has worked with Amitabh Bachchan on more films, however no one talked about it. For the unversed, Urmila was the leading lady in Ram Gopal Varma's, Rangeela, Daud, Satya, and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. All these four films were commercial successes, with Rangeela and Satya achieving cult classic status. The director said:
"I think she is the most versatile actress, that is why I have worked with her in so many movies. I have worked with Amitabh Bachchan more, but nobody talks about it."
People who have watched Urmila's film with Ram Gopal Varma would know that her beauty was one of the most central points of the film's story. At a time when actresses were sidelined, Urmila's screen time also dominated over her two superstar costars, Aamir Khan and Jackie Shroff. In his book, Guns & Thighs: The Story of My Life, the director revealed that it was after being enchanted by Urmila's beauty that he thought of making the movie Rangeela. Ram Gopal Varma mentioned his leading lady of four films in the chapter titled, Women in My Life. Talking about Urmila, the director penned:
"Post coming into films, the first girl to have an impact on me was Urmila Matondkar. I was mesmerised by Urmila's beauty -- from her face to her figure... everything about her was just divine. She had done a few films before Rangeela, which hadn't done well and she hadn't made much of an impact on the audience either."
Ram Gopal Varma was married to Ratna Varma, and they share a daughter together. As per reports, his closeness with Urmila led to his marriage ending with his then-wife. Rumours also floated around the time that Ratna had slapped the actress after finding out about the alleged affair. However, there is no confirmation on any of these rumours. Urmila Matondkar, on the other hand, married Mohsin Akhtar Mir, a Kashmir-based businessman, on March 3, 2016. After eight years of marriage, the actress filed for divorce in 2024.
