However, he noted that while they were not announcing the finished series yet, things are progressing well behind the scenes. Now, with this announcement putting the actor back in the spotlight, some fans have grown curious about Nathan’s personal life.
Like most people, Nathan Fillion is also someone who has a number of ‘non-negotiables' when it comes to his love life. For those who don't know, the 55-year-old seems to be in a relationship with actress Tania Raymonds, 38. The duo first stepped out together last summer and created a lot of buzz. While they have not commented publicly on their relationship, Nathan and Tania have made several red carpet appearances together.
Now, the question that remains is if Tania truly meets all of Nathan’s non-negotiables. During a conversation with People, the actor emphasized the importance of first establishing a relationship, especially if one is in a long-distance relationship. He said:
"I'm going to tell you this now, kids out there: long-distance relationships don't work unless you've established them first. If you establish a relationship and then somehow you're separated by distance, that can work. But you can't start something long-distance because you'll never be priority to their choices."
According to reports, Nathan and Tania both live in Los Angeles, and this means that, luckily for the actor, long-distance won't be necessary. The Rookie star reportedly grew up in Edmonton, Canada, but he moved to LA because of his work, and since then, that is where he has lived. Meanwhile, Tania was born in Los Angeles and, while growing up, attended Lycée Français de Los Angeles.
Apart from properly establishing long-distance relationships, Nathan said that another non-negotiable that he has is observing how one person treats others as well as how they usually handle a negative situation. He was quoted as saying:
"You have to be able to be with someone to watch the choices they make to understand who they are. You have to see how someone treats waiters. That's a great litmus test. It's just ... how do people deal with something negative happening in their life? Can they be joyful?"
During his MCM Comic Con London appearance, Nathan explained that bringing a television series like the Firefly animated reboot is a rather long process. Even though the fans and cast alike are super excited about the project, they are yet to find a broadcaster or streaming service. He said, “It takes a lot longer than one would hope to develop a television series.”
For the unversed, the animated revival was announced at the beginning of 2026, with a number of the original cast members announcing their plans to return alongside Nathan. Unlike a live-action reboot, they will be voice acting for the upcoming revival.
As per reports, Nathan Fillion will return as the leader, 'Captain Malcolm Reynolds'. Alan Tudyk will be back as the pilot, ‘Hoban “Wash” Washburne', and Morena Baccarin will reprise her role as the sophisticated ‘Inara Serra'.
The other returning cast members include Gina Torres as ‘Zoe Alleyne Washburne', Sean Mather as ‘Simon Tam', Summer Glau as ‘River Tam', Jewel Staite as ‘Kaylee Frye' and Adam Baldwin as ‘Jayne Cobb'. It is also believed that the story of the series will take place between the original 2002 television series and the 2005 film Serenity. This will allow the timeline to grow without the need for a lot of rewriting.
