The death of Mark Fuhrman, the controversial figure of the O.J. Simpson double murder trial, has brought the spotlight on his wife, Kelly and three ex-wives.
Former LAPD detective, Mark Fuhrman died on May 12, 2026, at the age of 74. His Lynda Bensky and Chief Deputy Coroner Lynette Acebedo confirmed Mark's passing, revealing his cause of death as a private, year-long health battle. He became one of the most prominent and controversial figures in 1995, due to his involvement in the O.J. Simpson double-murder trial. He was found guilty of insulting people of colour by using racial slurs, which ultimately led to his retirement. Following that, he became a true crime story writer. Amid Mark's passing, here's a look at his four marriages.
Mark Fuhrman was initially an ordinary detective working for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Hence, his personal life, including information on his wife, did not make it to the news reports. After the 1995 O.J. Simpson case, he made headlines, and interest in his life and family background was sparked. However, he kept his personal life largely private, probably due to the sensationalism of the infamous murder trial. Thus, overall,, not much is known about his four marriages, except for the identities of his wife and three ex-wives. According to Encyclopedia, Mark Fuhrman was first married to Barbara Coop.
Mark and Barbara divorced in 1977, following which he tied the knot again. He walked down the aisle a second time with Janet Sosbee. However, it ended in a divorce in 1980. After being divorced twice in three years, Mark married Caroline Lody, but it did not last long either. They split in 2000 after becoming parents to a daughter, Haley. By that time, he was retired from the LAPD as well. After three failed marriages and a fresh career start as a true crime story writer, the former LAPD detective found the lasting love of his life, Kelly Fuhrman. They got married and welcomed a son, Cole. He reportedly remained married to her until his death.
According to a report by TMZ, Mark Fuhrman was diagnosed with an aggressive form of throat cancer in 2025. After bravely fighting it for nearly a year, he passed away due to the same. Sources told the outlet that the former detective was hospitalised for nearly a week before his death. At the same time, he had undergone some treatment for the disease. However, he allegedly made the difficult decision to stop his treatment during his final days. Mark reportedly died peacefully at his Idaho home on May 12, 2026.
Authorities from the Kootenai County Coroner's office later confirmed his death. Mark spent his final days away from the public spotlight while he was in Idaho. Some reports also mentioned that there would be no funeral service after his death. Notably, his death comes just after two years of O.J. Simpson's death, who died from Prostate cancer in April 2024. Their names were largely famous due to the 1995 murder trial involving the death of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
Mark Fuhrman was born on February 5, 1952, in Eatonville, Washington. According to Encyclopedia, his father, Ralph Fuhrman was a truck driver and his mother, Billie was a waitress. Regarding his career, he was an American law enforcement officer, author, and commentator. Mark served in the Los Angeles Police Department for nearly two decades. The impact of the O.J. Simpson trial ended his law enforcement career in 1995. After his retirement, he transitioned into the media and publishing industry. He authored many true-crime books, such as Murder in Brentwood, based on the Simpson investigation, and Murder in Greenwich related to the Martha Moxley murder case.
