Jodie Turner-Smith was a banker before she became an actress. She even pursued a career in modelling for a brief period until she made her acting debut. Back in 2023, Jodie recalled in an interview with Muse magazine that she used to tell stories during her childhood and invented many at the same time. She said that she spent most of her time in the library and was playing football when she was 13 years old. Jodie also opened up a little bit more about her early days and said:
“I was raised in a Jamaican family. Though we were in England and then eventually America, my parents—especially my mother— always sought out a community of culturally similar friends and acquaintances. I remember a house that always smelt of delicious food cooking, and then incense burning afterwards. More than that, I remember a house that was always full of people and laughter and their stories.”
Jodie Turner-Smith’s career dates back to 2013 when she made her debut in a few episodes of the HBO series, True Blood. After appearing in a few more shows, Jodie gained recognition for playing 'Sgt. Azima Kandie' in the TNT show, The Last Ship, between 2017 and 2018. She has been playing 'Sami Zahir' in The Agency since 2024 and was featured in an episode of Star Wars: Visions, released in 2025.
Jodie Turner-Smith has also been cast for important roles in many films throughout her career. In 2019, she portrayed 'Angela “Queen” Johnson' in Queen & Slim, and has been the executive producer of the political thriller film, The Independent, released in 2022. Jodie was also seen as 'Countess Sekou' in the Netflix action-comedy film, Murder Mystery 2. She has additionally portrayed 'Athena' in the sequel to Tron: Legacy, Tron: Ares, released in 2025. Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith’s love story started in 2018 when they first met at Usher’s birthday party. Reports of their marriage emerged in August 2019 after the duo was reportedly seen picking up something that looked like a marriage license. An insider then revealed in December 2019 that the pair had tied the knot. However, detailed information about the marriage ceremony was not disclosed. The former couple became parents of a child named Juno in April 2020.
Although they kept the details of their romance away from the limelight, Joshua disclosed during an interview with Jimmy Fallon in 2021 that Jodie had popped the question first in Nicaragua when they were on the beach. While the duo continued appearing together at various events, including the 2022 Met Gala, Jodie filed for divorce due to irreconcilable differences in October 2023. The divorce was settled in May 2025, where Joshua was to pay child support every month. The divorce settlement also included equal custody of Joshua and Jodie’s child.
