Meet Christina Koch's Husband, Robert, Ahead Of Artemis II Mission, Ex-Head Of A Geospatial Program

The excitement surrounding NASA's most-awaited Artemis rocket launch is increasing with every passing second. For those unaware, the rocket is scheduled to launch on April 1, 2026. Reportedly, Artemis II is the first crewed flight in NASA's Artemis program. The program in question is specifically designed to find human presence on and around the moon. The crew includes four people in total: Reid Wiseman, who will act as the commander; Victor Glover, the pilot; Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, who are the mission specialists.

It is worth noting that Christina Koch is the only woman in the four-person crew. She holds the record for the most consecutive days in space by a woman after spending 328 days in low Earth orbit aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule in 2019. Now, amid the buzz surrounding the recent Artemis II rocket launch, many have grown curious about her personal life. On December 20, 2018, Christina Koch and her husband, Robert Koch, who also goes by Bob, sat down for an interview with Houston We Have a Podcast, the official podcast of NASA's Johnson Space Centre. Here, Christina revealed that while she was working at a remote research base in American Samoa, she met her husband, Robert. For those unaware, American Samoa is a territory located 500 miles south of Hawaii in the middle of the Pacific.

As for the research station Christina was working at, she said that it was a climate research station best known for what's called the Keeling Curve. Christina confessed that she was "very lucky" to meet her husband there. When asked about how they met, Christina recalled that she and Robert actually met at a Halloween party.

In the same podcast interview, Robert revealed that when he and Christina met each other, he was working as a contractor for the government in American Samoa. Additionally, he was the head of the geospatial program for the Samoan Department of Commerce. He said that he was there on a two-year contract. He compared it to a “similar type of mission trying to accomplish something somewhere unique and travel somewhere and do some interesting work.”

Robert Koch kept in touch with Christina Koch as she worked next to a surf break he was interested in 

According to Christina, Robert kept in touch with her because she happened to work next to a surf break that her now-husband was interested in learning more about. Robert reportedly called it “one of the best surf breaks on the island.” He confessed that when he learned Christina used to work near that area, he started asking her to send him videos or surf reports. This is so that he wouldn't have to drive an hour across the island to find out.

For those unaware, Christina was selected by NASA in 2013. Though she initially chose to keep the fact to herself after getting her acceptance call, as she wasn't allowed to talk about it to anyone, when she did tell Robert about it sometime later, he was elated. According to Robert, the night she finally told him, he had a lot of emotions come over him. But above all, he was super proud and excited for her. Another thing he thought was that it was a “big secret” to keep. But he was quick to accept that they were heading to Houston.  

Robert Koch and Christina Koch are stewards of a house over 100 years old  

Reportedly, Robert and his wife, Christina, are the stewards of a house that is more than 120 years old. Robert had said that he likes to call the house the Little John residence. Apparently, the house has a unique history. And while it is a lot of work being stewards of such a house, he thinks of it as a labour of love and “a really exciting thing to be a steward of such a unique property while living in the area.” The home is also something that ties both Robert and Christina to Galveston.

Robert Koch is supportive of Christina's career as an astronaut  

In an interview, Robert agreed that while the one thing astronauts miss most is their family, their family also misses the person up in space. However, Robert added that he is proud of his wife, Christina, and his main goal is to support her as best as he can in her career as an astronaut. For instance, when she gets home after months in space, he makes sure everything is in order and that Christina is well cared for.
