Speaking about the McKenna West case, it hogged the limelight after Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had intervened and a judge in Dallas had ordered two hospitals to give the baby life-sustaining care and that the child remains in Texas till a hearing is held in August 2026.

The Los Angeles pair, Omar and Nausheen, stated that McKenna had violated the surrogacy contract immediately. They got hold of a restraining order which had prevented McKenna from seeing or holding the baby after he was born. The court documents obtained in Alaska mentioned that the pair alleged West had agreed with the decision to terminate the pregnancy. However, later her mind changed, and she completely cut off contact. A filing from the attorney who is representing the biological parents of the baby read:

"After heartbreaking consultations with medical providers and their own research about the suffering and quality of life HLHS babies endure, A.B. and C.D. (birth parents) made the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy. It is undisputed that West initially agreed and that she herself made the initial appointment.”

There are other court documents which revealed that the pair at one point had decided to have McKenna deliver the child in California. The parents have called the boy Rumi. The court documents further stated that West is harming Rumi by relocating to Texas, requiring him to be born in Texas, away from his parents and the specialized cardiac team in Los Angeles that will provide his lifelong care.

Netizens have mixed opinions about the case. A Redditor mentioned, "West, who was living in Alaska, ultimately travelled to Texas, where abortion laws are significantly more restrictive. She argued that she moved because she did not want to undergo an abortion and wanted to continue the pregnancy."

Another user sympathised with the condition of the baby and stated, "No way to say this politely, but given the condition it’s quite unlikely that the baby will grow up at all without serious medical intervention, none of which he is guaranteed to survive, which is why the clause was there in the first place. idk this whole situation is horrible and sad, and another reason for me why surrogacy shouldn’t be a thing."
