Man who recorded the bison attack revealed that no one had provoked the animal

A Bozeman photographer named Mike MacLeod has recounted the incident that left a man brutally injured after a bison attacked him. He was photographing a bull bison near Bridge Bay Campground on Friday, July 10, 2026 (ET) when he noticed the animal behaving unusually. Talking about the same, he said:

"My wife saw a bull bison come into the campground. It wasn't an uncommon thing to see anywhere in the park. But there were these young boys standing by a tent, with their phones out. And for whatever reason, the bison, which was still like 50 to 100 feet away, just charged them, unprovoked. I didn't see any provocation."

Mike asserted that everyone had maintained a respectful distance from the bison. However, the animal became agitated and soon began chasing a young couple before turning his attention to a grandfather and his grandson who were walking on a campground loop road. He shared that he initially thought the bison was charging at a campground vehicle before realizing it had locked onto the two visitors.

The video Mike recorded shows the bison tossing the man into the air. He revealed that soon after the incident happened, his focus shifted. He said, "From my Army days, I knew as soon as that guy was in the air that the situation had changed." Mike revealed that he stopped videoing because his next priority was to haze that bull away from the victim. He revealed that he was afraid that the bison was going to "gore the guy on the ground." He further recalled what happened after and said:

"I charged the bull and a bunch of men behind me joined me, and we all hazed the bison off. A lady was on the phone with 911. Another guy was holding his hand the whole time because he was severely injured ... Another lady did a blood sweep and checked for immediate emergency injuries. People just came from everywhere to help out the situation."

Mike MacLeod revealed that he was still in touch with the victim's family

Emergency responders arrived within minutes, and the victim was taken to the hospital. He revealed that he is still in touch with the victim's family and was told the man suffered a broken leg that required surgery. For the uninitiated, the National Park Service has often issued warnings about staying at least 25 yards away from large animals like bison, who can run up to 35 mph and become especially aggressive during the summer breeding season. He said:

"He never lost consciousness that I saw. His main concern, number one, was, 'Is my grandson safe and OK?'...I really feel like I would have called this one wrong because I did not expect that to happen. The Park Service is always warning people that all wildlife is dangerous. And they're right. We love Yellowstone because it's a wild place. And that's part of the real risk that we have of being around those wild animals."
