Lil Poppa documented his grief for his friends' deaths through his music

Lil Poppa built his career on 'pain rap,' using his music as a primary outlet for documenting the trauma and grief associated with losing his two closest friends to street violence. In the same year as the real-life drive-by shooting incident, the Florida rapper released Purple Hearts. It was his breakout single and was a raw, firsthand account of the tragic demise of the two young boys. The song became one of the most well-known parts of Lil Poppa's discography, recognised for its honest account of grief. Besides Purple Hearts, Lil Poppa also created Eternal Living with Polo G to share his sorrow with the world.

Eternal Living was a collaboration born of the two singers' shared experiences of loss and survivor's guilt, and it became one of Poppa's most-streamed tracks. Love & War also explores carrying the heavy emotional weight of survival into adulthood. Stop Grieving, a track from Lil Poppa's later work, also explored the theme of processing constant loss. Blessed, I Guess album, and its accompanying documentary, was the safe space for Poppa where he openly discussed the intersection of his physical health (sickle cell anaemia) and the mental toll of losing loved ones.

Fans felt Lil Poppa's grief led to his untimely death

Fans have pointed to Lil Poppa's 'pain rap' style and recent social media activity as signs of deep distress. They felt that, being unable to bear the loss of his friends anymore, the rapper might have taken his own life. Contradictory views regarding Lil Poppa's cause of death

Some fans of Lil Poppa ruled out the possibility of the Jacksonville rapper's s**cide and predicted that he had a natural death due to illness. He suffered from sickle cell anaemia and was known for being on and off with his music career due to frequent, debilitating pain crises, characteristic of the disease. Following the confirmation of his death by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, many fans and observers pointed to potential complications from sickle cell anaemia as a likely cause, though an official medical explanation has not yet been released.
