Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleJyotika and Suriya are making headlines as they renewed their marriage vows. The couple celebrated 20 years of marital bliss. For the uninitiated, the duo got married in Chennai on September 11, 2006. Jyotika and Suriya’s intimate vow renewal ceremony became more special as their children, daughter, Diya and son, Dev, joined in.
Diya served as the maid of honour, while Dev walked his mother, Jyotika, down the aisle during their 20th-anniversary vow renewal. Amid this, let’s have a look at their evergreen love story.
In 1999, Jyotika and Suriya first met during the filming of the Tamil film Poovellam Kettupar. At the time, the two were struggling actors and were working hard to establish their foothold in the industry. Jyotika, who hailed from Mumbai, did not know the Tamil language.
But Jyotika tried really hard to learn the language to make her presence in the Tamil film industry. Her dedication towards acting and her perfect dialogue delivery surprised Suriya. He was amazed and got attracted to Jyotika due to her sincerity towards her work and her humble behaviour with her co-stars.
Love blossomed between Jyotika and Suriya on the set of Kaakha Kaakha. According to reports, their relationship became serious during the making of the film. When the film Kaakha Kaakha was released, the duo was believed to have gotten engaged. The engagement was a low-key affair, and it is said that Suriya had gotten engaged to Jyotika to get some time to convince his parents about their relationship.
However, the duo faced opposition during the early stages of their relationship. Suriya’s father, Sivakumar, initially objected to the marriage. Reports suggested that due to differences in background and personal concerns, Sivakumar hesitated to give a green signal to their marriage. In an interview with Galatta, Sivakumar shared a rare insight into the following matter. He said:
"Initially, I didn’t accept his love. However, he was very adamant and said that he would only live with her; otherwise, he would remain single for life. Then I thought about how, over the course of my career, I acted in around 150 films, and most of them had the concept of love marriages. So I finally agreed."
The power couple’s marriage functions had kicked off with a mehendi ceremony on September 10, 2006. The next day, on September 11, 2006, the duo exchanged wedding vows at Park Sheraton Hotel in Chennai. The wedding was according to traditional Tamil culture, and the ceremonies had begun early in the morning. For the big day, Jyotika opted for an elegant pink silk saree, while Suriya opted for a white silk mundu with a matching white silk shirt.
On September 11, 2026, Jyotika and Suriya completed 20 years of marriage. Later, on September 15, 2026, the actress took to her Instagram handle to share a heartwarming video of their vow renewal ceremony. The couple renewed their marriage vows in an intimate Christian ceremony, celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. For the special ceremony, the couple opted for matching white attire, with Jyotika wearing a bridal gown and the Karuppu star dressed in a white tuxedo.
Sharing the clip, Jyotika penned a heartfelt note. In the note, she wrote, "A vow renewal, celebrating our 20 years of love and war." She mentioned that it was not a celebration of a perfect marriage but rather a celebration of imperfections, adjustments, understanding, sacrifices, and loving each other selflessly. She highlighted that it was a celebration of "us".
Jyotika called her life a gift as she has a man who loves and respects her beyond himself. She vowed to be thankful as every morning she wakes in the arms of a man who protects her, and for her beautiful children who have given her life meaning and given her a reason to live.
Suriya and Jyotika embraced parenthood in 2007, when they welcomed their first child, daughter, Diya. Years later, in 2010, they welcomed their second child, son, Dev. However, the couple chose to raise their kids away from the limelight. They have chosen not to make fame the centre of their children's lives. The duo is involved in social work, including initiatives such as the Agaram Foundation. Through their parents' involvement in education and helping society, Diya and Dev are exposed to kindness and compassion.
