Walsh’s 6-year-old son Adam disappeared from a Florida Sears store in July 1981. Two weeks later, authorities found the boy’s severed head 120 miles away in a drainage ditch. The case wasn’t officially closed until 2008.
Channeling their grief, Walsh and his wife Revé co-founded the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 1984 and created the Code Adam program. They also championed the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, signed into law in 2006. America’s Most Wanted aired for 23 years on Fox, returned briefly on Lifetime in 2012, was revived in 2021 with Elizabeth Vargas, and Walsh resumed co-hosting with his son Callahan in December 2023.
On July 27, 1981, Adam Walsh, who was 6 years old at the time, went shopping with his mother, Revé, at a Sears department store inside a mall in Hollywood, Florida, near their home. According to the police report, Revé left Adam in the toy section with a group of boys playing a video game while she went to look for a lamp.
When she came back, Adam was no longer there. A store security guard had reportedly instructed the group of boys to leave the store and assumed Adam was with them, which led the Walshes to believe he might have already been outside when he was taken. After an unsuccessful search inside the store and an initial police investigation that led nowhere, a mutual friend helped John get in touch with then-Good Morning America host David Hartman.
The host agreed to show Adam Walsh’s photo on national television to help find him. Two weeks after Adam vanished, John and Revé traveled to New York to appear on the morning program.
While they were there, they received devastating news. Authorities had found Adam’s severed head in a canal in Vero Beach, Florida, about 120 miles north of the mall where he was last seen. John later described breaking down completely upon hearing it and said the hardest part was telling Revé, because it felt unbearable.
Ottis Toole, a convicted murderer and associate of one of the country’s most notorious serial killers, Henry Lee Lucas, confessed to killing Adam. Toole claimed he abducted the boy and began hitting him when he would not stop talking. However, days later he withdrew that statement, even though he had repeated the confession multiple times before. Despite the retraction, both law enforcement and the Walshes continued to believe Toole was responsible.
In a recorded interview with Texas Rangers, Toole reportedly said Adam was the youngest victim he had ever had, ABC News stated. Toole died on Sept. 15, 1996, at age 49, from liver failure while serving life sentences for other crimes in a Florida prison, the Chicago Tribune reported. In December 2008, police officially closed the case and announced they believed Toole was Adam’s killer, though he was never charged.
Other theories slowly started emerging. In March 2010, a report claimed witnesses saw Jeffrey Dahmer with Adam on the day he disappeared. At the time, Dahmer was living in Miami Beach, though all his confirmed murders happened near Milwaukee. Dahmer denied any involvement, the Miami Herald reported.
The rest of Adam’s remains have still not been recovered. John also told ABC News that in 1988, Toole wrote to him and Revé asking for USD 5,000 in exchange for information about where the rest of Adam’s remains were. John additionally accused the Hollywood, Florida police department of not taking the missing persons case seriously at the start and of mishandling the investigation, calling it one nightmare after another.
Authorities had planned to test Toole’s car and a blood-stained carpet, but could not locate the items in storage. When the case was closed in 2008, Hollywood Police Chief Chadwick Wagner apologised to John and Revé and acknowledged the department’s failures.
