The third episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 ends with ‘Rhaenyra’ realising that she has been played by ‘Lord ‘Ormund Hightower.’ The episode starts with ‘Ormund’ deciding that he will surrender to ‘Rhaenyra.’ Although he doesn’t want to do that, ‘Daemon’ is there with ‘Caraxes,’ and ‘High the Hammer’ and ‘Ulf the White’ are there with ‘Vermithor’ and ‘Silverwing.’
With the presence of three dragons, the Hightower Army is not expected to survive, even if they have their own dragon. Everything has been seemingly resolved. ‘Ormund’ can now return to Oldtown. But ‘Daemon’ remembers that ‘Ormund’s’ squire is ‘Prince Daeron Targaryen,’ ‘Alicent’s’ youngest son. ‘Daemon’ insists that ‘Daeron’ come back to King’s Landing as a hostage. If ‘Ormund’ acts up, ‘Daeron’ has to face the consequences.
When the boy arrives, he refuses to speak to ‘Rhaenyra,’ who is daydreaming about killing him for the death of Jace. ‘Daemon’ believes that ‘Daeron’ needs to die because he is a threat to her claim. But ‘Rhaenyra’ lets him go and arranges for ‘Alicent’ to be reunited with her “baby boy.”
However, it turns out that the boy is not ‘Daeron.’ The boy admits that he is an imposter. ‘Ormund’ dyed the boy’s hair silver and threatened to murder his real mother if he stepped out of line. The recap reveals that the real ‘Daeron’ is still fighting for Team Green on Tessarion, his blue-winged dragon. ‘Rhaenyra’ learns in real time that ‘Ormund’s’ surrender was a lie. His host sacked Tumbleton, and the city is now Greens-occupied.
When the war moves into the Reach, the third episode focuses on ‘Rhaenyra’ falling apart at King’s Landing. She is dealing with the grief over ‘Jacaerys.’ ‘Rhaenyra’ sees Jace walking through Red Keep corridors. She cannot sleep in the royal bedchamber because “there are too many ghosts in the room.” The show frames this as her “falling on black days.”
‘Rhaenyra’ is even tested publicly as she tells everyone that the crown demands duty instead of plunder and scores points by redistributing produce and bread. But she admits these are small measures compared to her larger remit to rule. The biggest confrontation comes with ‘Corlys Velaryon,’ who asks her to bless ‘Alyn’ and ‘Addam’ as his issue and “let them now be Velaryons.”
‘Rhaenyra’ is now obsessed with proving the legitimacy of her rule, and it’s registering as paranoia. ‘Corlys’ tells her that she should be ashamed and points out that his sons are bastards of mixed blood, but so are the sons of ‘Rhaenyra,’ the two dead ones plus ‘Joffrey,’ now her declared heir.
Towards the end, ‘Rhaenyra’ faces two problems at the same time. Tumbleton has fallen to the Greens militarily. Politically, her own legitimacy is being questioned by the very people backing her. The episode ends when she is asked about her next step as she hears that ‘Daeron’ is still out there on Tessarion.
