Now, Hayden’s autopsy has been completed, but her cause of death is still under investigation.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office revealed that they received a call on August 16, 2026, at approximately 1:51 PM regarding a reported cardiac arrest. When the Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene, they located a female in cardiac arrest. Soon, resuscitation efforts were made, but they were unsuccessful.
The deceased was later identified as Hayden Panettiere. The Coroner’s Office confirmed that Hayden was “found unresponsive inside the residence”. However, there were no signs of trauma. The statement can be read as:
“No signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death. This investigation remains active and ongoing. No further details are available for release at this time.”
In 911 dispatch audio, the authorities confirmed that Panettiere suffered an apparent “overdose.” As per a report in TMZ, Narcan, used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, was found at the scene. The actress’s on-again and off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was spotted outside the actress’s home as he flew from Los Angeles to South Carolina. However, it is still unclear whether Hickerson placed the 911 call.
Hayden Panettiere was dealing with many health issues. Hayden was reportedly on medication for anxiety. A source close to the actress revealed that the side effect of the medication impacted her speech. As per the source:
"Earlier this year, she did seem a little tired at times. But she was a night owl and… she has a lot on her plate. Hayden also suffered from anxiety at times, and I know she would occasionally take medication for that. And every so often, that could impact her speech."
In May 2026, Hayden made a public appearance for a book signing at the Harmony Gold Theater in LA. The actress discussed some of the most heart-wrenching episodes of her life from her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. The discussion made her emotional, and a source revealed that Hayden’s speech appeared ‘slow and slurred at times’. Not only that, the organizers repeatedly asked the attendees not to record the event and later prohibited photos or videos as fans approached Hayden Panettiere during the signing.
Hayden was in LA to promote her memoir, an ode to the struggles she endured. The memoir has a detailed description of Hayden’s life as a child star, when she was forced to act, her abusive relationships, her years of addiction to substances, postpartum depression, custody of her child, and the unfortunate death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere.

Hayden leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter, whom she shares with her ex-partner, the former Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
