A few days ago, TMZ reported that Wladimir had asked a California court to appoint him as a temporary guardian of his daughter, Kaya, in order to protect her rights as the sole beneficiary of Hayden's estate. Since Hayden died without a will, her only daughter, Kaya, is expected to inherit her mom’s assets. On October 8, 2026, 11-year-old Kaya appeared remotely in court alongside her dad. Kaya attended the hearing over Hayden’s estate.
Hayden and Wladimir’s daughter was temporarily on camera and spoke to the judge when asked to confirm her identity and whether she was with her father. 11-year-old Kaya appeared in a white T-shirt with her hair pulled back. She was soft-spoken and composed as she responded to the judge’s questions. At the end of the hearing, the former professional boxer was granted temporary guardianship of Hayden Panettiere’s estate. The judge also stated that Kaya does not need to be present for the next hearing, set for December 7, 2026.
For those unaware, Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko welcomed their daughter, Kaya, in 2014. The former couple raised Kaya together for the first four years of Kaya’s life, but in 2018, the Heroes actress gave full custody to her ex-fiancé. While her decision to give full custody of Kaya to Wladimir raised many eyebrows, it was heartbreaking for Hayden.
Opening up about the following, during a May 2026 episode of Jay Shetty’s podcast On Purpose, Hayden shared that at the time of the custody change, she was seeking treatment for alcoholism, substance abuse, and postpartum depression. For those unaware, in 2018, Hayden signed over custody of Kaya to her ex-fiancé, Wladimir. She added that she was hurt by the idea that people might think she willingly gave up her child and did not care about it.
Speaking on Red Table Talk in 2022, Hayden explained that giving Kaya’s full custody to Wladimir was not fully her decision. She mentioned that she was not aware of Wladimir’s sudden claim to have full custody of their child. She said:
"Kaya was almost 3, and it wasn't fully my decision. In fact, I didn't even know it was happening until she was already over there. I thought she was going over to visit him like she always did. Kaya would go back and forth from me in Nashville and Ukraine, and then once she was over there, it was immediately, 'I want full custody of her,' which was a shock to me. It was very upsetting signing those papers to give him full custody."
Hayden Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, in South Carolina. The actress' on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were with her when she died. The Greenville County Coroner’s office has classified Hayden’s death as an accident. On September 14, 2026, TMZ reported that the Heroes star took "one fatal pill" on the day of her death, and multiple law enforcement sources believe that the medication was oxycodone laced with fentanyl.
