Gypsy Rose First Kissed Ken Urker In Prison, Then Married Someone Else Before Reuniting Years Later

Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ken Urker's relationship began where one expects the least: in prison. Years before they welcomed their daughter, the couple's rocky love story began with a letter sent to the prison where Blanchard was serving a sentence for her role in the killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.

Over the years, what started with a letter of support from a pen pal eventually blossomed into a relationship spanning nearly a decade despite a breakup, another marriage, and years spent apart. Now, their complicated love story has been tragically cut short with Urker's sudden death on October 1, 2026, on what was supposed to be his 34th birthday.

Gypsy Rose and Ken Urker's first kiss happened in prison

Gypsy Rose and Ken first connected while the former was incarcerated for her role in the killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Blanchard, after watching the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, which detailed her childhood and the abuse she said she endured at the hands of her mother.

The two began corresponding regularly. Their friendship eventually turned romantic, with Blanchard previously recalling how they would spend hours talking on the phone. Urker eventually visited her in prison. According to Blanchard's earlier account, it was during that first visit that they shared their first kiss.

The relationship quickly became serious. Ken proposed to Gypsy in October 2018 during one of his prison visits. She later recalled that the proposal was something they had discussed before, saying she accepted because they believed they had a strong relationship and wanted a future together.

However, the engagement didn't last. The couple eventually called it off and went their separate ways. Their relationship would remain complicated for years, with both moving on to other relationships. They briefly reunited in 2019, but split again and didn't reconcile until years later.

Gypsy Rose married Ryan Anderson after breaking up with Ken Urker

During their time apart, Blanchard began a relationship with Ryan Anderson, whom she had also met while incarcerated. The pair's wedding happened inside the prison itself. They exchanged vows in a prison ceremony in 2022, and Blanchard was eventually released in December 2023.

Gypsy and Ryan's marriage did not last long. In March 2024, only months after her release, Blanchard announced their separation and filed for divorce the following month. Their divorce was finalized in December 2024. Around the same time, she and Ken found their way back to each other.

Blanchard and Urker reunited in April 2024, shortly after her separation from Anderson. Urker later told PEOPLE that he visited Blanchard during the first weekend of April, describing their reunion as an incredible experience. Their relationship became serious again in no time. The pair attended the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival together, and soon discovered they were expecting a baby. That same year in December 2024, they welcomed their daughter, Aurora Raina Urker.

For Blanchard, becoming parents marked a new chapter in a relationship that had already survived years of separation. She told PEOPLE in 2025 that both she and Urker felt "united in love for each other" even if they were not married yet. She said:

"I have been in love with Ken since the day we first met. We have been through more than most couples have and have had challenges that would break many couples, but we still stand strong, and I don't ever see that changing."

Ken Urker's death came less than two years after the birth of Aurora. Urker was found dead at his home in Raceland, Louisiana, on his 34th birthday. According to Blanchard, she became concerned after sending him a birthday message and receiving no response. Her brother Dylan and his wife later went to Urker's home after making plans to have dinner with him and discovered him dead.

In her first statement following his death, Blanchard told PEOPLE that she believes Urker died from an overdose, although she does not know what he took or whether the overdose was intentional. Blanchard said Urker would "forever be my soulmate." But above everything else, she wants their daughter to remember her father for who he was. She said:

“Ken was an amazing father and a man who was deeply loved… Ken loved our daughter, Aurora. She is a beautiful reflection of his enduring spirit, and through her, a part of him will always remain with us.”

Urker's death remains under investigation, and authorities have not publicly determined whether an overdose occurred or whether it was accidental or intentional.

For Gypsy, Ken "will forever be my soulmate and my red string, a connection that time, distance, and even death can never erase."
