Gracie Abrams revealed how worried she was that her relationship with her boyfriend, Paul Mescal would impact her writing if she felt 'secure and stable' with him.
Gracie Abrams is one of the most popular singer-songwriters we have seen in recent times. Some of her most popular hits include I Love You, I’m Sorry, That's So True, Packing It Up, and Close To You, among others. Apart from being a musician, many people might also recognise Gracie as the daughter of director, J.J. Abrams. Recently, Gracie has been hogging the spotlight after revealing how a “secure and stable” relationship would impact her writing.
In a recent interview, Gracie Abrams opened up about her relationship with her boyfriend, Paul Mescal. She revealed the anxiety she has about how her relationship would impact her songwriting. According to the singer, she had felt “talked out” after the release of her album, The Secret of Us, in 2024. Gracie admitted that she had felt insecure about her previous relationships; however, when it came to her dynamics with Paul, it was all things healthy. She said:
“I was worried feeling secure and stable was threatening my drive to write music. It freaked me out.”
Apparently, it was Gracie's frequent collaborator, Aaron Dessner, who helped her stop overthinking about this matter. She said that she learned from Aaron that it's “okay to mine deeper and refine what you are naturally inclined to do, even if that looks less shiny and new on the outside.” During the same interview, Gracie also spoke about the time she spent with her boyfriend, Paul, in London when he was filming Hamnet. She claimed that the conversations she had with him at the time felt like reading the greatest book ever because he was part of such a project.
Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal sparked romance rumours after the duo were spotted out at dinner in London in June 2024. Two months later, they were spotted again walking through Mayfair while holding hands. While they kept their relationship low-key, they were often seen supporting each other. For instance, when Paul was seen chewing Gracie at one of her concerts, the singer showed her support by attending the after-party for Paul's Gladiator II premiere.
It was in July 2025 when Gracie and Paul finally decided to go Instagram official, with the former posting a picture of herself leaning on the actor's shoulder during a set at Glastonbury. Opening up about what made him go public with their relationship, Paul said in an interview:
“I actually do have an answer, but everything to do with that is deeply precious to me and I don't want to. This isn't…I don't really know. I want to protect those things fundamentally.”
Before Gracie began dating Paul Mescal, she was in a long-term relationship with songwriter, Blake Slatkin. After being together for five years, the duo decided to call it quits in 2022. Meanwhile, Paul had dated singer, Phoebe Bridgers and broke up with her in 2022 after two years of dating. In October 2024, Paul revealed why he wanted to keep his love life private despite his growing fame. For those unaware, Paul became well-known for his portrayal of ‘Connell Waldron' in Normal People. The actor shared:
“I learned that there's certain lines in the sand now for me that just are going to be impenetrable for the benefit of my own sanity. The speculation has been kind of mad for the last x amount of years. I'm not comfortable inviting any access into that part of my life…It might be public interest, but it's not public-obligated information.”
