He repeated a long-running claim that she married her biological brother for immigration purposes. For those who do not know, it has restarted an old debate about Ilhan, which has not been proven in court until now.
U.S Representative from the 5th Congressional district in Minnesota, Ilhan Omar has always been in the news for her sharp views and for being the first African refugee elected to the U.S. Congress. However, the same background has once again sparked a controversy. Recently, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin sat down for a conversation at a Republican event in Dallas and revealed that investigators are looking into Ilhan's family immigration history.
He has alleged that she tied the knot with her biological brother for support to get him entry into the United States. According to Markwayne, authorities are checking if any immigration violations took place when he obtained U.S. citizenship. He also suggested that if federal investigators find that some sort of immigration fraud had taken place, then they will take the appropriate action for it. In his words:
"There may be more to this, the whole family migration, and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with."
However, he did not give any evidence to support the allegation or announce any specific criminal charges against Omar. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has also refused to speak anything on the matter. Alongside, they have given no hints about any potential future enforcement actions.
For those who do not know, the allegations date back to 2009 when Ilhan got married to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen. However, some critics have long claimed that he is, in reality, her biological brother. So, they got married to help him get immigration benefits.
These allegations have been discussed in the political and media circles for several years now. In fact, they specifically surface during election time. Despite the repeated controversy, it has not been proved in any investigation report that they are biologically related.
When Ilhan was asked about the allegations, she denied them. The U.S. representative went so far as to call them false and offensive. Supporters have often argued that the false rumor has become popular without any conclusive evidence.
Meanwhile, many news organizations and fact-checking groups have reviewed the allegations over the years. Some reports have found some gaps in timeliness, addresses, and personal records. But none of them have proved that Ahmed Nur Elmi was related to her before their marriage.
The DHS' comments have also raised questions about whether Ilhan could be deported if she is found guilty in the matter. Legal experts say that immigration fraud is a serious federal offense. So, if they find that a person got immigration benefits through any fraud, the government can seek penalties. It can range from criminal persecution and revocation of citizenship to deportation. However, it will happen only after the authorities have substantial evidence and the case moves through fair legal proceedings.
Ilhan Omar became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000 at the age of 17, and since then, her personal life has drawn significant attention. She had a religious marriage with Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2002, but they did not get a legal license and separated in 2008. After a year, she legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, and they separated in a religious ceremony within 2 years. IIhan then reconciled with Hirsi in 2011.
Eventually, she got a legal divorce from Elmi in 2017 and married Hirsi in 2018. However, they also divorced in 2019 and share three kids together. Later, IIhan married political consultant Tim Mynett in 2020. He is a democratic strategist who has worked on her political campaigns and played a significant role in her rise in national politics.
