Amid Kristen’s claims, here's a look back at Dax’s reaction after he received massive backlash for jokingly telling his wife he would never kill her, even though he was incentivized to.
It all started when Kristen Bell shared a sweet photo of her and her husband, Dax Shepard, celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary. In the photo, the couple can be seen in a tight embrace. But while the snap looked full of warmth, it was Kristen's caption that caught attention for all the wrong reasons. The actress penned:
“Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: 'I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.'"
Many fans accused Kristen of trivializing domestic violence, especially because October, when the actress made the post, was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Dale Margolin Cecka, director of the Family Violence Litigation Clinic at Albany Law School, claimed that comments like Kristen’s ‘normalize abuse and silence survivors.’
Fans in the comments section of the post also came for Dax, wondering how he could joke about something like that. And as the criticism mounted, Kristen was forced to restrict comments on the post.
Dax Shepard addressed the backlash months later during an episode of Armchair Expert while speaking to his guest, comedian Nikki Glaser. Nikki told Dax that she initially wanted to make a joke about his comments when she hosted the Golden Globes in January 2026. But she ultimately decided not to since it was old news by then and she did not “want to make his life harder.” Curious after hearing this, Dax asked to hear the joke she had in mind. To this, Nikki said:
“Die My Love. If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. Sorry, Baby. These are not just captions to Dax Shepard's Instagram post for Mother's Day, or for Christmas, or captions for his anniversary post. These are movies nominated tonight.”
Dax clearly found the joke amusing as he burst out laughing. During the episode, Nikki confessed that after the incident she never reached out to Dax, mostly because she had no idea he even knew he was being called out.
The actor claimed at first, “a week and a half” went by and he had “no clue” about the issue. He said that Kristen got to know about it through her publicist, but she never told him anything about it, although he was alerted by someone else. Dax was quoted as saying:
“Well, I was alerted by someone that this whole thing was happening. I didn't know. And Kristen knew through her publicist but didn't tell me. So I actually didn't know, and this was brought to my attention.”
He said that he found out after someone attempted to comfort him about it. This is when he finally went and confronted Kristen.
Nikki added that the thing that bothered her about the incident was that people chose to talk about it so much compared to all the other things happening in the world. She called those bothered by it “fucking losers” and said they were simply wasting their time getting angry and that they should go read some files.
