Brad Pitt recently opened up about the darkest chapter of his life. The 62-year-old actor revealed in an interview with Esquire that at one point in his life he had suicidal thoughts. Brad shared that it was the only time his mental state deteriorated to the extent of wanting to end his life. Notably, the actor finally mustered the courage to talk about the issue a decade after his divorce from Angelina Jolie was filed.
Brad felt like he was trapped in the real-life version of his movie, Fight Club, from which he had no way out. In such a moment, the actor felt like a steel bullet pierced his head, relieving him from the pain of living. His exact words were:
"I've never been suicidal except for one little period. And in that one little period, I just thought I just couldn't...just didn't see a way out the Fight Club. The pain was so oppressive that I wasn't going to act on this, but I could feel...I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head, and it felt like relief."
That particular low phase of life made Brad Pitt see firsthand the mindset of people who took the extreme step of ending their lives. He mentioned he finally understood why people committed suicide. As per him, it was a way to free oneself from all the pain and suffering at once. However, Brad Pitt also shared that people often step back from suicide once their survival instincts kick in, which was also the case for him. He stated:
"And I thought, 'Oh, okay, now I understand'. I understand suicide, in the sense that it's just relief. It's just looking for relief from the pain. But I also think we have incredible survival instincts. And for me, that immediately kicked in, but it was just…"
Upon hearing Brad Pitt's poignant words, the interviewer asked him further about his suicidal tendency. The host wanted to know why Brad felt like ending his life. The actor didn't want to delve too much into the topic and brushed it off, saying it was 'family stuff'. He further said, "We could leave it at that" and move on.
As Brad didn't share the exact time period when he went through the difficult time, fans connected it to his split with Angelina Jolie and with his kids dropping his surname. However, the entire thing remains speculative, and there are no confirmed reports regarding the same.
