What happens in the film, Michael?

Michael showcases the life of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. It shows how Michael Jackson comes out of his father, Joe Jackson's influence and establishes himself as an independent solo performer. While the film’s narrative does not focus on major controversies around MJ, including accusations of child abuse, the biopic clearly shows the controversial singer’s insecurities with his appearance.

MJ is seen getting a nose job while he discovers that he has vitiligo, a condition where the pigmentation of someone's skin can become lighter. MJ’s insecurities were connected to the criticism and pressure he experienced from his father during his childhood.

Michael vs his father, Joe, is the core of the biopic, Michael. The divide between the father and son duo is clearly prominent in the film. As Michael rises to fame, Joe tries to keep the family identified as a singular group rather than being recognized through MJ. He starts controlling MJ. There are repeated arguments and clashes between MJ and Joe as the former wants independence. However, as the pop star becomes an adult, Joe no longer physically attacks him.

The biopic, Michael, shows how eagerly the singer wants a supportive and caring father figure in his life. He quickly bonds with music producer Berry Gordy, who teaches him about music and sound. As he becomes comfortable around him, he hugs Berry. While MJ grows older, he develops a similar father-like relationship with his bodyguard, Bill Bray, who also supports and protects him.

Michael’s professional relationship with fellow musician Quincy Jones also gives the vibes of a paternal bond, as Quincy offers life advice and suggestions on his music. The biopic shows how MJ’s family helps him become successful, but his father Joe’s control also makes it difficult for him to live and make decisions freely. While Michael emotionally connects with and loves his mother, Katherine Jackson and his siblings, he emotionally distances himself from his father. He finally succeeds in coming out of his father’s influence when he experiences stardom.

The biopic portrays Michael as someone who has difficulty developing normal bonds with people of his age. This is all because of his upbringing. Michael’s father, Joe, made his son spend much of his childhood rehearsing and performing. Thus, it is difficult for him to bond with others. This continues in his adulthood as well. As the pop singer becomes famous, it becomes even more difficult for him to have normal relationships. Even his own brothers sometimes struggle to understand him.
