Born in Texas, Kiki attended Emmett Scott High School. She was a brilliant student in her school and even received a scholarship for her education. She went on to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Howard University. In the 1970s, Kiki’s career took off when she started as a professional dancer and performed around the globe. She was one of the dancers at the 49th Annual Academy Awards in 1977.

Kiki worked as an actress and voice artist in various Broadway theatre productions in the 1970s and 1980s. She also starred in the 1978 film, The Wiz. Kiki became a popular face when she co-hosted the show, Showtime at the Apollo, for 16 long years. During her time on the show, Kiki was known as the 'Apollo Queen of Fashion.'

She co-hosted the show alongside a rotating cast, which included Steve Harvey, Sinbad, Mo’Nique, Rudy Rush, Mark Curry, and Rick Aviles.
