Caroline Campbell grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, the same place as her now-husband, Sam Burns. This is where they first crossed paths as children through church. Caroline was the golfer’s first Valentine's Day date when they were around five years old.
Sam previously joked that after their initial childhood date, Caroline wanted little to do with him for many years. What Caroline did not know at the time was that having grown up in the same community, their relationship would eventually turn into something way more than friendship.
Notably, Sam and Caroline began dating when they were students at LSU. Back then, Sam had been working towards his professional golf career. On the other hand, Caroline was pursuing a degree in marketing. During her time at university, she was pretty active on campus and later went on to earn a Master's degree in counseling after finishing her undergraduate studies.
The couple dated for around four years before the PGA Tour star proposed to Caroline in 2019. The amount of thought he had put into the proposal was evidenced by the place he chose to propose, as it reflected one of his greatest passions. Sam got down on one knee during the RBC Heritage week at Harbor Town Golf Links in South Carolina. For those who don't know, this place had a special meaning to him, and he had visited it for several years.
Caroline later recalled that she had no idea that Sam was going to propose to her there until he suddenly stopped and dropped to one knee. She said, “Sam just asked if I wanted to walk over early 'cause we were ready before everyone else. Right past the restaurant he just stopped me and started talking, and then I knew, and then he got down on one knee.”
Just a couple of months from this, she and Sam tied the knot in Louisiana. One of the biggest moments that came into Caroline and Sam's lives was in 2024, when they welcomed their first child in April that year. They lovingly named their son, Bear. Ahead of The Masters, Sam had claimed that if his wife went into labor during the competition, he would have immediately left to be there with her.
Thankfully, for the couple and the golfer's fans, they welcomed Bear after the Masters week. Since then, Bear has also become a familiar face on the PGA Tour. He often makes appearances alongside his parents during tournament week festivities. Caroline and Sam welcomed their second child, a daughter named Belle, just two weeks ago, on July 3, 2026.
Caroline Campbell has been beside Sam from the very start and has witnessed every chapter of his journey. She knew him before his PGA Tour victories and has supported him through his Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup appearances and his major championship spotlight.
Sam even credited Caroline for encouraging him to participate in The Open Championship this week. He had initially planned to skip the tournament to wait for Belle’s arrival. He said:
“She basically said, 'I've got this at home. Go over there and give it your best,' and here we are.”
