With 'Peaky Blinders' gearing up for a bold new chapter and a new 'Duke Shelby', take a look at the real-life love story of Jamie Bell and his enduring marriage to Kate Mara.
Jamie Bell is making headlines for his upcoming role as 'Duke Shelby' in the new era of Peaky Blinders, set a decade after World War II, being the "older, wiser, more ambitious, and most certainly more dangerous" version of 'Tommy Shelby's (Cillian Murphy) illegitimate son (played by Conrad Khan in the 2022 series). Set in Birmingham in the 1950s, the new chapter will shift its focus to 'Duke' as he carries the Shelby legacy into a new era.
With the first look at Jamie Bell in his 'Duke Shelby' avatar, the excitement for the show's upcoming season is high. All eyes are now on Bell's love story that has blossomed behind the scenes. With Bell preparing to lead a new generation of Shelbys, take a look at the woman who has been by his side all these years: Kate Mara.
Kate Rooney Mara is a critically acclaimed actress whose work in projects like House of Cards, American Horror Story, and The Martian left a lasting impact on the industry. Born in 1983 in Bedford, New York, she is the heir of America's prominent Mara family, who are co-owners of the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Even though Kate grew up in a prestigious football dynasty, she found her passion in acting from an early age, making her film debut at age 16 in the 1999 film Random Hearts. However, it was her work as 'reporter Zoe Barnes' in Netflix's 2013 drama series, House of Cards, that cemented her position in the domain. Later, her work in movies and shows like Fantastic Four, A Teacher, and The Astronaut earned her critical acclaim.
Jamie Bell's love story with Kate Mara began a decade after their first meeting. Their paths crossed for the first time in 2005 when both went for a screen test. Ten years later, destiny brought them together under similar circumstances. They reunited in 2015 for a screen test of the film Fantastic Four, and both successfully landed their respective roles in the film as 'Sue Storm / Invisible Woman' (Kate) and 'Ben Grimm / The Thing' (Jamie).
It wasn't an instant love; it started with friendship. Kate, who later revealed that she thought Jamie was the "biggest catch" the moment she met him, and she even started setting the actor up with her friends, knowing he was single. Speaking about her initial impressions of Jamie, the actress told host Ted Danson on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast:
“I just thought he was the best, and he was single, and I was trying to set him up with all these people. I thought, ‘I gotta set him up with someone. He's the biggest catch. How is he not with someone amazing?’... I just didn't know that I was the person I was looking for. It took me a year to figure that out.”
The two had been friends for about a year, and it wasn't until the press tour of Fantastic Four that everything changed. During the tour, Jamie and Kate started spending more time together, hanging with each other amid the chaotic production, and before they knew it, their friendship had blossomed into something much bigger. Kate jokingly describes the beginning of their relationship as "trauma bonding."
Once they realised their true feelings, things moved quickly. Kate says the shift was almost instant, and they were deeply in love. During her appearance on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast in 2025, the actress recalled how they instantly knew they were going to get married. She said:
“We were like, ‘Oh, I guess we're getting married.’ Like instantly. 'Cause we knew each other forever. We just thought, ‘Oh, right. This is going to be forever.’ And here we are, a bunch of kids later. Yeah, it's the best.”
Jamie and Kate officially started dating during their film tour, and by 2017, they were married. Their wedding was an intimate celebration with only close family and friends, at a neighbour's rustic property just across the street from their L.A. home. The Rocketman star spoke about their close-knit wedding during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Jamie shared:
“We had a lovely wedding. It was very small and intimate. There was only about 60, 70 people there, which was lovely. We actually got married right across the street from our house.”
The House of Cards star has long kept her personal life out of the spotlight, and the Peaky Blinders star also shares that ideal, especially when it comes to their kids' privacy. In 2019, the couple announced the birth of their first child, a daughter, sharing on Instagram that their baby girl was born "a couple weeks ago." In late 2022, they welcomed their second child, a baby boy. However, not much is known about the little ones, and that's exactly how Jamie and Kate plan to keep it, at least for now.
Kate has described their marriage as something she is “very protective of,” and it shows in the way she and Jamie light up every time they speak about their love story.
