For those who missed the August 21, 2026 episode, Jonathan’s crew member O.J. Ganuelas got the bad news that his dad passed away.
The way Jonathan consoled his loyal deckhand, changed course, and made sure that O.J. could get home left viewers feeling immensely emotional. Now, with Jonathan in the spotlight, fans have begun wondering about his personal life.
According to reports, Jonathan Hillstrand is married to a woman named Heather Hillstrand. While not much is publicly known regarding her personal life or career, she had previously joined her husband on several crab fishing expeditions.
She also travels with him whenever possible. Jonathan often posts pictures from their travels on his Instagram feed. For instance, in July 2021, he shared a snap from their time in Alaska. His caption revealed that they had a fun time together as he wrote, “Back in Alaska salmon fishing with my beautiful wife and beautiful life.” Jonathan posted another picture from their trip in Hawaii in August 2020, which he captioned, “Another great day on the water!”
Heather and Jonathan first crossed paths in church. It is unclear when the duo exactly began dating, but it is believed that they got together “several years” before their November 2017 wedding. For those unaware, the couple tied the knot in Las Vegas in November 2017. After the ceremony, the Deadliest Catch star even attempted to serenade Heather. The same was shown in a video that he posted on X (formerly Twitter); however, his emotions got the best of him. Jonathan could hardly finish without tearing up.
It is worth mentioning that this is not Jonathan’s first marriage. He was previously married to a woman, with whom he shares two children, a son named Scott and a daughter named Tae. Those who have been following Jonathan for a long time might have seen Scott appear in several episodes of Deadliest Catch. However, he eventually left the show to focus on and spend time with his family.
Jonathan has never opened up about the identity of his first wife or revealed when they tied the knot and how long they were married. On the other hand, before marrying Jonathan, Heather was also in a prior relationship and had welcomed three daughters of her own.
Since their marriage, Heather has been Jonathan’s biggest supporter. Be it sorting crabs or his creative endeavours, Heather has been by his side through it all. Heather has previously appeared in photos promoting the Time Bandit captain’s children's books, like Adventures of Joey and Andy Crabs: Crab Day Afternoon, Adventures of Joey, Andy, and the Little Bird trilogy.
Working at sea for extended periods can be extremely challenging for crew members at times, and the same was seen on the recent episode of Deadliest Catch. Jonathan’s brother, Andy, wanted to finish his first opilio season strong and went out on the waters with the team even though the forecast was not looking good. At this point, a crew member named O.J. Ganuelas got the bad news that his father had passed away.
After consoling him, Jonathan maneuvered through the ice, changing course so that he could take O.J. back to Saint Paul Island so that he could catch a flight home. Despite the warning about the ice, Jonathan wanted to get O.J. off the boat safely, and he used his wealth of experience to do just that. In case Jonathan might have failed, the captain would have had to limp the 360 miles back to Dutch Harbor.
