John Lithgow and his wife, Mary Yeager turned heads at the Tony Awards 2026 red carpet. They share over four decades of history.
Veteran actor, John Lithgow just made history at the 2026 Tony Awards, held on June 7, 2026. He won the title of Best Leading Actor in a Play for his role as author, 'Roald Dahl', in the Broadway production, Giant. It was the third Tony Award win of his career, marking a significant 53-year gap from his first Tony win in 1973. It led to a record for the longest span between two Tony victories. Additionally, at 80 years of age, John became the oldest male actor to win a Tony Award, shattering the record previously held by Roy Dotrice. Roy won a Tony at 77 in 2000.
John's latest win also made him one of only four performers in Broadway history to win Tony Awards in three different acting categories. Amid his career-defining success, the one person he had as a constant support system beside him, was his wife, Mary Yeager. She even happily posed at the red carpet with the actor, even twinning with him in black. The duo locked arms and shared sweet smiles. As John Lithgow had a gala time at the award show in New York City, here's everything to know about his better half and what makes their relationship unusual and fun.
Mary Yeager is a retired UCLA professor who is best known as the spouse of the award-winning actor, John Lithgow. She spent decades working as a professor of business and economic history at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) before her retirement, as the actor shared during his March 2025 appearance on the SmartLess podcast. John often credits his wife of four decades for his successful career, and he didn't shy away from doing so even after making Tony history. During his award-reception speech, John Lithgow dedicated his victory to his wife, saying:
"[I dedicate the award] to my wife, Mary, who has seen me through two incredible and exhausting years bringing this play to Broadway."
Mary is also an avid traveller, and since retiring from her job, she has been able to explore that side of her more. According to her husband, she frequently travels and has seen more parts of the world than he has. She also sometimes accompanies him to places where he goes to perform his plays, and he loves having her around. As per John, in Mary's presence, he feels more sorted and ready to deal with the madness of play preparation.
When John Lithgow was asked about his wife on the SmartLess podcast, he jovially stated that they made a very unusual couple. Sharing the reason, he cited their poles apart professions. As per John, an actor and an educator were not supposed to be compatible or get married, for that matter. He felt that God created them as very different individuals because of their different lifestyles and mindsets. But as the couple unexpectedly got tied up with each other, she had no choice but to constantly try to keep up with his crazy antics, as jokes by the actor. Speaking about the same, John said:
"I've been married 43 years to my wife Mary, who's a UCLA professor of history, economics and business history. We are an unlikely couple, you know? God never meant professors and actors to get married because our lives are so different. She is constantly having to adapt to these crazy right-angle turns I keep taking."
John Lithgow and Mary Yeager's love story started in 1980 when they were set up on a blind lunch date by a mutual friend. At the time, he was a temporarily out-of-work actor, preparing for a project, and she was starting her career as a history professor at UCLA. Interestingly, the Interstellar star wasn't dressed his best on the date, and he was even sweaty, but Mary had already fallen for him at first sight, so those things didn't matter to her. The duo kept on going on more dates and soon decided to spend the rest of their lives together.
After about a year of dating, Mary and John took their relationship to the next level. They tied the knot in December 1981, and early in their marriage, she established a rule for exchanging gifts. She wanted "nothing useful" from him because she had received electronics and other home appliances during her first marriage. She wasn't quite fond of them and probably thought they were unromantic. Her condition amused the Harry Potter actor, who found it endearing to swap practical gifts with those that hold sentimental value.
As for their current life, they are parents to two children, son, Nathan Lithgow, 43, and daughter, Phoebe Lithgow, 44, and he is also the father of actor and therapist, Ian Lithgow, 54, whom he shared with his ex-wife, Jean Taynton. Thus, both John Lithgow and Mary Yeager found each other after their respective first marriages didn't work out.
