After Cape Verde's impressive performance, its team captain, Ryan Mendes has found himself in the spotlight of an investigation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The veteran footballer, who has led his team to a historic knockout stage is  under serious investigation by the New Zealand Police. According to reports, Ryan is involved in an alleged incident involving a translator during Cape Verde's tour of the country a few months ago. Although the investigation is active, no criminal charges have been announced to the public.

Who is Ryan Mendes? 

Ryan Mendes is one of the most admired footballers in Cape Verde's history. He is a 36-year-old winger who has represented his country since 2010. Eventually, it has made him one of the country's greatest players. He is the country's most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer. In turn, it has earned him more than 100 international appearances. At the same time, Ryan has enjoyed a long professional career in Europe, the Middle East and Turkey.

The star footballer has also played for multiple clubs, including La Havre, Lille and Nottingham Forest. Later, he spent several seasons in the UAE. Ryan now plays for the Turkish club, Igdir FK. On the other hand, he is a part of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. In this bid, he has led the team in all three group-stage matches. In fact, he has also helped the country to qualify for the knockout rounds for the first time. However, the new allegations have now shifted the focus away from Cape Verde's historic campaign.

Why is Ryan Mendes in legal trouble?

According to a Brazilian news outlet, a Brazilian woman who worked as a translator for the Cape Verde national team filed a complaint with New Zealand Police after an alleged incident at a hotel in Auckland on March 27, 2026. It was the same time as the Cape Verde Football team's tour of New Zealand. The woman claimed that Ryan entered her hotel room and assaulted her. The outlet reported that she later underwent a forensic medical examination. In turn, the investigators collected medical records documenting the injuries.

The outlet also revealed that the hotel CCTV footage is also a part of the ongoing investigation. The country's authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway, but they have not publicly identified the person under investigation due to the country's privacy laws. Meanwhile, no criminal charges have been announced to the public. At the same time, none of the allegations has been proven in court. Later, the woman and her husband reportedly asked FIFA and the Cape Verde Football Federation to prevent him from playing any more matches amid the investigation. As a general rule, it is important to understand that independent judicial bodies do not comment on allegations they may or may not have received, nor on whether or not there are ongoing investigations into the alleged cases. What can happen next with Ryan Mendes?

The New Zealand Police's investigation will determine whether they have sufficient evidence to file formal criminal charges against Ryan. Until then, he is not charged with any offence, and the legal process continues. Meanwhile, Cape Verde is preparing for their Round of 32 clash with defending champions at the FIFA World Cup, with Ryan leading the men. However, FIFA and the Cape Verde Football Federation have faced a crisis about how they respond to serious allegations in major International tournaments.
