As per reports, the documentary will follow Elizabeth’s transition from life outside to life in federal custody. Buzz surrounding the documentary has also shifted the focus to her personal life, including her husband, Billy Evans.
Elizabeth Holmes had become Silicon Valley’s youngest self-made female billionaire after she founded Theranos, the blood-testing company, at the age of 19. After committing investor fraud, Elizabeth received a sentence of 135 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release.
Elizabeth reportedly shared two children with her husband, Billy Evans. Billy had previously shared in an interview that he relocated with both his children from California to Texas so that they could visit Elizabeth nearly every weekend. Elizabeth and Billy’s first child was a toddler when the former entered prison.
As per a recent report by The New York Times, Billy started his own blood-testing company called Haemanthus while his wife has been serving her jail term. In May 2025, the company began seeking investors. Tech experts in Silicon Valley were shocked and questioned Billy’s audacity to launch the startup, which promised to make a medical diagnosis in veterinary medicine first before potential human applications in the future.
After it was reported that Billy had successfully raised millions of dollars from investors, tech consultant Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies Inc. said:
“It's got so many corollaries to the Theranos model. I can't say they're not going to get funding, but it's going to be highly scrutinized because of the link to Theranos.”
Tim’s prediction turned out to be right as Billy’s blood-testing company was eventually forced to speak out to reassure investors and potential future customers that they are not “Theranos 2.0.” Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Haemanthus began by acknowledging Billy Evans’ relationship with Elizabeth Holmes. They claimed that “Skepticism is rational,” before denying they have any connection to Elizabeth’s blood-testing company. The post read:
“This is not Theranos 2.0. Theranos attempted to miniaturize existing tests. Our approach is fundamentally different. We use light to read the complete molecular story in biological fluids, seeing patterns current tests can’t detect. Not an improvement. A different paradigm.”
According to reports, Billy Evans was raised in San Diego in a well-known family in the hospitality industry. In 1953, his grandparents, William and Anne Evans, started the Evans Hotel Group. Currently, it is Billy’s father, William L. Evans, who manages the group containing the Bahia Resort Hotel, Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, and The Lodge at Torrey Pines.
Billy’s LinkedIn profile revealed that he studied at MIT, after which he began working as an analyst at LinkedIn under their strategy and analytics leadership program. He remained there from 2015 to 2017. He then went on to work at Luminar Technologies, a self-driving technology company founded by Austin Russell. He stayed with the company till January 2019.
Coming to Billy Evans’ relationship with Elizabeth Holmes, the couple met for the first time in 2017 at a charity event. After being introduced by a mutual acquaintance, Billy and Elizabeth spoke with each other for several hours. Billy had previously admitted that he felt an instant connection with Elizabeth. As their relationship progressed, they got engaged in early 2019. Since then, Billy has remained by her side through thick and thin.
