South African footballer Jayden Adams' sudden death has left his fans in complete shock. For those unaware, he passed away at the age of 25 on July 11, 2026. He was considered one of the budding talents from his country and had also recently played at the 2026 FIFA World Cup just weeks before his death. Why did Jayden Adams say he had to fix his attitude and that he got his ‘punishment’ before his death?

Back in 2024, Jayden Adams was called up to the Bafana Bafana team that was preparing to face Congo in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. However, his late arrival there led the footballer to be excluded from the national team by coach Hugo Broos. He was snubbed for a year before he finally got the chance to play again in the international friendlies against Panama.

At the time, Jayden admitted that thanks to Hugo Broos’ zero tolerance policy for indiscipline, he learned a valuable lesson and worked on improving his attitude. Since then, he has never given his coach a chance to take him off the team again. Speaking about getting punished, Jayden told the media:

“It’s like I was not out for a while. They welcomed me like I was not out for a while. The coach did punish me. I did my punishment. When I got back, I think my performance didn’t give him a decision to put me out of the team. It was an eye-opener for me to do better and to fix my attitude. I did that and now I am back. Thank God for that.”

It is worth mentioning that Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos later explained his decision to snub the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder. According to him, Jayden was like Relebohile Mofokeng and Mbekezeli Mobokazi. Since he became a star player at such a young age, he believed that Jayden had lost himself for a moment. He was quoted as saying:

“I think Jayden is the same story as [Relebohile Mofokeng] and [Mbekezeli] Mbokazi. When you’re so young and suddenly you become a very good player, a star, and there is so much interest in you, it’s difficult to manage that. And in a certain moment, Jayden lost himself also; the moment he went to Sundowns, I think he thought, 'Ah, things are done,' and as time went on, he was not playing; he was on the bench, and he was even in the stands at certain moments.”

On the morning of July 11, 2026, police authorities in South Africa announced that they had launched an investigation after the discovery of a 25-year-old man believed to be Jayden Adams at a residence in Schotschekloof, a neighbourhood in central Cape Town. Later, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, stated that the cause of Jayden's passing has not been confirmed yet. He urged fans and the media to refrain from speculation, adding that any official information would be made public by the appropriate parties. In his words:

“The cause of Jayden's passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time. Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course."
