Veteran Nepali actor, Sunil Thapa breathed his last at the age of 68. What led to the actor's untimely death?
Veteran Nepali film actor Sunil Thapa, who was last seen in the series The Family Man, passed away suddenly on February 7, 2026, in Kathmandu. Thapa was a towering figure in the Nepali cinema and has appeared in over 300 films. He was recently seen in Raj and DK’s crime series, The Family Man 3. As the news of his passing led the headlines, his fans are eager to know the reason behind his sudden death.
As per multiple reports, the reason behind Sunil Thapa’s death is reported to be a cardiac arrest. As per the chairperson at Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, Rajendra Bahadur Singh, Thapa was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. An ECG was conducted at 7:44 am, which confirmed his death. The doctors suspect cardiac arrest as the reason for his death. Speaking about the same to the Post, he said:
“He was unconscious when he was brought in. An ECG was done immediately, which confirmed his death.”
Before entering films, Thapa began his career as a model in Mumbai in the mid-1970s and worked for various clothing brands. Not just this, he also played professional football for clubs in Bombay. In addition to being a model and actor, Thapa worked as a photojournalist and covered the Bhutanese coronation in 1974.
Thapa worked in many notable roles in over 300 Nepali films and was popular for his role as ‘Rate Kaila’ in the film Chino. The character established him as one of the most sought-after antagonists in the Nepali film industry. He was noted for villainous roles in Nepali cinema and won several awards, including the Motion Pictures Award Nepal twice.
Thapa began his career in Bollywood with film, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, starring Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri. He earned significant recognition for his supporting role in the film Mary Kom, for which he received a nomination at the Filmfare Awards. He recently made a brief appearance in Season 3 of the Amazon Prime series The Family Man. Thapa portrayed 'David Khuzou', a respected local leader and MCA Chief in Nagaland. Thapa also served as the chairperson of the Everest Film Academy.
Talking about his personal life, Sunil Thapa is reportedly married to Rajani Limbu, who has been his support system. She had not only inspired and supported him but also loved and cared for the family. The couple has two children, and there is not much detail available about them. It is also reported that other members of his family reside in Mumbai; Thapa had been living in an apartment in Kathmandu.
