'Seven Dials' actress, Helena Bonham Carter, dated director, Tim Burton, for 13 years. Read on to know the reason behind their split.
Helena Bonham Carter is currently trending because of her recent appearance in Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials. Helena features as ‘Lady Caterham’ and does complete justice to the role. Carter is a poignant name in Hollywood, having been nominated for two Academy Awards: one for Best Actress in The Wings of the Dove and the other for Best Supporting Actress in The King’s Speech.
Some of her best performances include Fight Club, A Room with a View, the Harry Potter series, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Enola Holmes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish, and Les Misérables. There is no doubt that Helena is a tremendous actress, but apart from her professional life, Helena’s personal life has been in the headlines quite often.
Carter is currently dating historian, Rye Dag Holmboe. The duo began dating in 2018, and he is 21 years younger than Carter. Regarding their huge age gap, she once told The Times, ‘Everybody ages at a different rate. My boyfriend is unbelievably mature.' Before being in a relationship with Holmboe, Carter was in a serious relationship with filmmaker, Tim Burton. Let us revisit their relationship and what led to their breakup after 13 years.
Carter and Burton met for the first time in 2000 on the set of Planet of the Apes. Soon after the filming, the duo started dating. After Planet of the Apes, Burton and Carter went on to work in films like Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) and Alice in Wonderland (2010).
Many believed that Carter’s relationship with Burton got her poignant roles in his films. But that was not the case. She worked hard and gave auditions, too. In an interview with the Guardian, Carter talked about the same and said:
“I never got a free ride with Tim because I was sleeping with him. I was always auditioning. And I gave him two kids and everything!”
Carter and Burton welcomed their first child, son Billy Raymond, in 2003. The couple welcomed their second child, daughter, Nell, in 2007. Though Carter and Burton never married, they were always like a big happy family.
Despite being in love for almost 13 years and having two kids together, something was missing in Carter and Burton’s relationship. In 2014, there were rumours of a split, and a source told PEOPLE that the couple had ‘separated amicably’ after the duo realised they were not meant to be together forever. However, despite their separation, the two remained friends and co-parented their children.
Though Carter and Burton were never married, she still referred to their split as a "divorce." The stunning actress took a long time to come out of her mourning phase after her relationship with Burton was over. During her appearance on the Therapy Works podcast, Carter looked back at her split and revealed:
“I went through a very painful divorce," she said. "It was a long-lasting thing. That's the other thing, it's not that finite. It never ends. Even if you divorce somebody, it's a kind of marriage if you have children with them. The relationship has to change. It's a very complicated thing how to share the children."
In the same interaction, she also recalled having many uncomfortable moments in the early phase of her split. She also stated how strangers went ahead and made her uncomfortable by asking questions about her split. In a 2016 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Carter revealed the aftereffects of a split and said:
“With divorce, you go through massive grief — it is a death of a relationship, so it's utterly bewildering. Your identity, everything, changes."
