Why did Britney Spears split from Kevin Federline? The couple had levelled serious accusations at each other.
Referred to as the ‘princess of pop’, Britney Spears is one of the most sought-after American singers, songwriters, dancers, and actresses. Her first two albums, Baby One More Time and Oops!... I Did It Again had become one of the best-selling albums, making her the best-selling teenage artist. Apart from Britney’s professional life, her personal life has also garnered a lot of limelight.
In 2004, she got engaged to American dancer, Kevin Federline, their romance had got a lot of limelight since Kevin had broken up with actress, Shar Jackson while she was expecting his baby. Britney and Kevin got married in 2004. In 2005, the duo welcomed their first child, Sean Preston and in 2006, their second, Jayden James, was born. However, in 2006, Britney filed for a divorce from Kevin, which soon turned ugly. Let us read on to learn the reason behind their split, which led to an ugly custody battle.
Britney Spears met Kevin Federline in 2004 at a club. Kevin was the backup dancer for Britney’s boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. It was love at first sight for Kevin, who was smitten with Britney. Within three months of dating, Britney and Kevin got married at an event billed as an engagement party in Studio City. Soon, the couple welcomed their two sons.
Within two years of their marriage, Britney Spears filed for a divorce from Kevin Federline, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’. Soon after Britney filed for divorce, there were many accusations on both sides. Britney stated that Kevin was obsessed with fame and used their marriage to advance his own career.
Not just this, Britney also alleged that Kevin was unsupportive during her pregnancy and postpartum struggles. Another reason Britney cited in her memoir, The Woman in Me, for her broken marriage to Kevin was the constant media scrutiny that hounded their relationship.
Before Britney filed for a divorce from Kevin, he hinted at some difficulties in their marriage. But Kevin never expected Britney to file for a divorce. He felt ‘blindsided’ when he learned about his divorce from a TV producer. In his memoir, You Thought You Knew, Kevin revealed that he had a fight with Britney, which culminated in having his lawyer draft a letter demanding Spears not breastfeed the couple’s sons while being under the influence. But Kevin stated that the letter was never a divorce filing, but she knew that it was coming. When Kevin found out about the divorce, he felt ‘ambushed’.
Kevin revealed that while he and Britney were still figuring out the complications of their marriage, her legal team asked her to file for a divorce. On the other hand, her PR team revealed that after her highly-publicised split from Justin Timberlake, it would look bad if she got a divorce notice from Kevin and would put her in a bad light.
In her memoir, Britney wrote about the same and revealed that her lawyer had told her that if she did not file it, Kevin would do it. As she didn’t want to be ‘embarrassed’ or ‘humiliated’, she decided to take the move. In her words:
“What I gathered from this was that Kevin wanted to file for divorce but he felt guilty doing it. He knew that it would make him look better publicly if I was the one who filed.”
Soon after the divorce, Britney and Kevin reached an initial divorce settlement, which gave them joint legal and physical custody of their children. In 2007, their divorce was finalised, and the couple agreed to share joint custody of their sons. However, at that time, Britney faced mental health issues, which resulted in the court ordering the kids’ custody to be given to the father. Despite the mental health issues, Britney and Kevin amicably co-parented the kids.
However, in 2018, Kevin asked for a significant increase in child support from what he had been receiving in previous years. Kevin claimed that he makes less than one per cent of what Spears does. After months of discussions, Britney agreed to increase the amount. Soon, Britney and Kevin reached another custody agreement, which gave Britney 10 per cent of custodial rights and Kevin 90 per cent.
In 2022, Britney and Kevin’s relationship again garnered the limelight when he told The Daily Mail that their sons had chosen not to see Britney anymore. He added that Britney’s social media posts were affecting the kids. Britney, on the other hand reacted to Kevin’s claims and revealed that raising teenage boys ‘was not easy’. In 2023, Britney consented to her children moving to Hawaii with their father. In the same year, she also stated that she and Kevin are amicably co-parenting the kids, and despite their moving to Hawaii, she is still connected to them.
