Vijaypat Singhania is considered to be the most important figure in the history of Indian textile. For those unaware, he took charge of Raymond Group in 1980. At that time, the Indian textile market was still developing and people bought clothes and not brands. However, Vijaypat built Raymond into a brand by selling quality style and reliability.
Slowly and gradually, he brought modern technology into the textile industry. He invested in good machinery so that he was able to make high-quality clothes. This raised the standards in the industry as all the competitors of Raymond focused on the quality in order to outshine him. Over the years, he set new benchmarks in quality, brand and customer service.
Coming to Vijaypat Singhania's personal life, he was married to Ashadevi Singhania. It is worth noting that even though Ashadevi stayed away from media attention, she always stood beside Vijaypat as his biggest supporter. They had three children together, Madhupati Singhania, Shephali Ruia and Gautam Singhania.
In 2015, Vijaypat Singhania handed his Rs. 12,000 crore company, Raymond, to his youngest son, Gautam. Reportedly, he also transferred his 37 per cent stake in the company to his son. However, soon after Gautam took charge, he made some decisions that were against his father's will. Slowly and gradually, the father-son duo started having multiple arguments, leading to a rift between the two. Vijaypat had once shared:
"He (Gautam) had agreed to give me some parts of the company, but of course, he backed out. So, I have nothing. I gave him everything. By all means, give what you want to. I'm not telling you "don't give. I'm only saying, give it after you're gone, after your death. Don't give it in your lifetime because you may have to pay a very heavy price."
Rest in peace Vijay Singhania!
