Usha Vance recently spoke about her husband, JD Vance's, earlier comments about how Erika Kirk influenced her to have a fourth baby.
After U.S. Vice President JD Vance, his wife, Usha Vance, recently opened up about how a deep conversation led them to have a fourth child. The couple recently sat down for an interview, where the U.S. Second Lady reflected on how a heartfelt discussion with Erika Kirk influenced both her and her husband, JD Vance, to reconsider some decisions. Meanwhile, the couple is set to welcome their fourth child, a baby boy, later this year.
JD Vance and Usha Vance recently sat down with CBS's Sunday Morning. Among other things, she explained how Erika Kirk's comments about family and motherhood influenced her. According to Usha, Erika Kirk expressed regret about not having more children with Charlie Kirk. While discussing the emotional conversation, Usha admitted it helped solidify her husband, JD Vance's, opinion on having a fourth child. She explains that the discussion helped her rethink that if they had another child, they would not have any future regrets. In her words:
"It really did crystallise for you (JD) that sense that if you could have that other child, then you would have nothing to regret. And if we couldn't have that other child, then we were very happy with the children that we had. It was very powerful, what (Erika) said about her own family, and certainly very moving to both of us."
However, Usha clarified that the conversation was not the only reason behind their decision. Instead, it became a part of a larger discussion that they had already been having for some time. Although some reports claimed that Erika's words directly changed her mind, Usha explained that the reality was different. She revealed that she had already started opening up about the possibility of welcoming another baby before she chatted with Erika. The Second Lady, who already has three children with JD Vance, said the experience added just another layer of perspective to the decision they had been considering for some time. Sharing her perspective, Usha said:
"I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility. I wouldn't say that this was, for me, in any way, the decisive factor. But it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having."
Earlier, JD Vance discussed the topic in an excerpt from his upcoming book, Communion: Finding My Way Back To Faith. In his book, he recalled how Erika Kirk spoke to Usha when she had just lost Charlie Kirk in an assassination. According to the U.S Vice President, Erika told Usha during their flight back after Charlie's death that she regretted having only kids with her husband. Instead, they had originally planned to have four kids.
JD wrote that he had been asking Usha for years about having another child, but she felt their family was complete. But something shifted for his wife after Charlie Kirk's funeral and Erika's confession. Soon, Usha became pregnant with their fourth child. In turn, JD admitted that the arrival of their new baby became a hopeful chapter after a period of grief and loss.
JD and Usha Vance's relationship began when they were both at Yale Law School. Although they came from different backgrounds, they quickly formed a connection. In fact, they supported each other through difficult phases. JD Vance often shared in interviews that Usha brought him a sense of stability and encouragement in difficult times. In 2014, they married in an interfaith ceremony that included Christian and Hindu traditions. Since then, they have welcomed three children, Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. Now, they are preparing to welcome their fourth child in July, 2026.
