He spent three years on the coaching panel before taking a break and then rejoined when the show moved from the BBC to ITV in 2017.
The Voice U.K. is currently produced by Lifted Entertainment, a subsidiary of ITV Studios. After almost a decade on ITV's version of the show, rumors began to emerge in early September 2026 that Tom Jones was being removed. As the singer confirms his exit, let's take a look at his wife and his struggle with grief after her passing.
Singer Tom Jones has not just confirmed his exit from the reality singing show, but also claimed he was fired as a judge from The Voice U.K. due to "financial difficulty with insurance." He revealed that he "did not want to leave". However, while he loved the show and appreciated the audience, ITV made the decision a while ago.
He said he was only recently informed of the decision and was told the reason for his removal was "financial difficulty with insurance." Tom Jones dismissed ITV's claims that they wanted to give The Voice U.K. a fresh start and said:
"They now say in the press they wanted to 'refresh' the show, and with a new coaching line-up there wouldn't be a chair for me. They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I'm not thrilled about that. So the only thing I know right now is that there's never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who's still pretty good at his job."
While Sir Tom Jones' journey with The Voice U.K. has come to an end, it has also brought the limelight back to his personal life. For those who are not aware, Jones was married to his childhood sweetheart, Linda, for almost six decades. However, their journey was anything but easy; given Tom's admission that he had over 250 affairs, losing Linda almost broke him.
Tom Jones has admitted he struggled to get out of bed after the death of his wife and revealed that therapy helped him and his family cope. For the unversed, Linda passed away in 2016, and in an interview in 2017, Tom opened up about the loss. He recalled he was so heartbroken when his beloved Linda lost her battle with lung cancer that he feared his grief would kill him.
Tom Jones eventually started to move on after taking the advice of his son Mark, who is also his manager, and seeing a therapist. In a conversation with Sunday Mirror newspaper in 2017, he reflected on overcoming the grief and said:
"Mark helped tremendously. He said, 'There is this lady you should see'. She counseled me on a lot of things. She said to me, 'You have got to carry on. If you don't, you will die'. I thought of my family, my son, my daughter and my grandchildren—all of that."
Tom Jones revealed how much his work helps him cope, as it distracts him from the pain. For those who don't know, Tom joined The Voice U.K. in 2012 but was dropped in 2015. He returned to the series in 2017 when the show was taken over by ITV. At the time, he had expressed how his work was keeping him alive and said:
"Time off would be death for me. The only time I'll take off is when I die. I don't take long periods of time off. I'm happier when I'm singing than not. We are talking about it now, so it looks pretty positive. I'd hate to count my chickens before they've hatched, but I'd like to. I like it, and they know I do."
