During the August 17, 2026 broadcast of the Today show, Craig Melvin had an unexpected emotional moment. It happened when Jenna Bush Hager was presenting the Morning Boost segment like she regularly does. In the segment, she showed a clip of a grandmother who was surprised by her granddaughter during the former's final chemotherapy treatment.

The clip touched Craig more than others, and Jenna quickly pointed out how he appeared visibly emotional. She said, “Oh, Craig, you have the Monday feels over there.” Referring to the clip, Jenna asked Craig, “Pretty sweet, right?”

Co-host Carson Daly also quipped and teased Craig by saying, “Look, he does have a heart!” This led him to explain the reason why he appeared so emotional. He revealed that the video struck a chord with him because it reminded him of his own mother's cancer journey, which just reached an important milestone. He stated, “Yeah, well, my mom rang the bell today, so, yeah, that's a good one.”

Carson Daly responded to Craig’s explanation by noting how “it hits home” and that “that's what the Boost does!” Seeing Craig tear up, Sheinelle Jones also offered him her support.

As per reports, Craig Melvin’s mother, Betty Jo Melvin, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, in June 2025, when she went for a routine mammogram. Just a few months after this, Betty spoke out publicly about the diagnosis. She claimed that the diagnosis was not what she expected on the day that she got it. She revealed that it left her “speechless” at the time.

“My youngest son, I lost my granddaughter to cancer, children’s cancer. I lost my son to colon cancer about five years ago, so to tell them your mom has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it was hard. It took me several hours before I could call them and let them know.”

For those unaware, Craig Melvin’s half-brother, Lawrence Meadows, passed away in 2020 from colon cancer. Since then, the news anchor has openly advocated for colorectal cancer screenings while keeping his brother in his memory.

Craig Melvin had called his mother the ‘rock’ of their family

Back in 2023, Craig Melvin had penned a sweet birthday note for his mom, Betty. She called her the “rock” of their family and the “glue” that keeps them together. Craig also claimed that he would not be himself without his mother. He credited her for sacrificing her entire life for the betterment of people around her. His note read:

“Betty Jo Melvin is the rock of our family. She’s the glue. Please join me in wishing her the happiest of birthdays. I’m not me without her, and neither is my brother, her siblings, or grands. She’s sacrificed her entire life so those around her can live better. The love that endures is beyond social media expression.”

Most recently, Craig and his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, spent some quality time with Betty as well as other members of their extended family during a vacation. The news anchor noted that they went to South Carolina with their favorite people. He wrote in the caption:

“A few snapshots from days well spent in SC with my favorite people. Filled with beach days, good food, loud talking, spades playing, movie watching, mediocre golf, plenty of laughs, and a whole lot of family time. Always the best time of the year.”
