'The End Of Oak Street' Ending Explained, The Pool Landing And What Comes One Year Later

The sci-fi horror The End of Oak Street is now available to rent on YouTube, Prime Video, and Apple TV+ as of September 15, 2026. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, the film follows the Platt family after their quiet suburban block is pulled into the age of dinosaurs.

For those who have watched it and found the final act confusing, this ending-explained breakdown will walk them through how the time jump works and what ‘Denise’s’ last choice means.

How does the neighborhood end up in the past, and how does the family find a way out?

The film sets its events in 1982 and drops small hints early. A news report mentions NASA tracking strange time shifts. In a backyard, a plant grows too fast. 'Denise' takes a photo of it to the library, and 'Mrs. Valcourt' identifies it as a species from 200 million years ago. 

Soon after, 'Brian' and his dog 'Starbuck' see bright flashes in the sky. The family thinks it is a storm, but 'Audrey' believes they are breaks in time. These breaks grow stronger. Each tremor opens a short-lived window to the distant past. At first the windows are tiny, just enough to bring a plant through.

Then the final flash is large enough to pull two miles of Flowervale out of its own time and drop it into the age of dinosaurs. There is no machine causing this. The movie treats it as a natural but rare cosmic occurrence. Survival becomes immediate. The Platts board up their house with wood from floors and cabinets.

'Brian' slips out when he hears 'Starbuck' barking. 'Audrey' follows him, and then 'Denise' and 'Greg' go after both kids. Inside a neighbor's home, they find a glowing sphere that shows modern houses inside it. It looks like a return door, but it closes before they can use it. The search turns deadly.

A T-Rex attacks the family during their reunion with 'Jeannette', a teen whose parents have died. 'Denise' tries a rifle, 'Greg' uses a sledgehammer, and 'Brian' uses a bow. The dinosaur injures 'Greg' and then kills him in front of 'Denise'. With no other option, 'Denise' leads the kids to 'Mrs. Valcourt’s' house, where another sphere floats near the roof.

The house is already damaged, and the family finds crocodile-like predators inside. 'Mrs. Valcourt' sacrifices herself to give them time. They climb to the roof, time the flashing light of the portal, and jump together with 'Starbuck.'

Why does 'Denise' return twenty minutes early, and what does the final barbecue really mean?

The portal does not send them to a different place. It sends them to the same neighborhood, but on July 11, 1982, about twenty minutes before the big transport happens. They land in a swimming pool, and the owner tells them the date. 'Jeannette' runs to find her parents while 'Denise' understands she has a brief window to change things. 

'Denise' tells her kids to wait on the hills outside the radius where the flash will not reach them. She then goes to a payphone. She does not explain the calls on screen, but the ending makes it clear. She calls people she knows are about to be taken, including 'Mrs. Huddleston', 'Mrs. Valcourt', and 'Mel Jacobs'. To save 'Greg', she orders a pizza from Pete's Pizza.

'Greg' is working as a delivery driver after losing his main job, so the order pulls him out to the hills and away from the street. From the hill, they watch their street vanish and get replaced by the prehistoric landscape. This time the authorities are ready because of 'Denise's' warnings.

A year later, a television news report shows the aftermath. The dinosaurs that came through to 1982 were killed or captured for study. The neighbors who listened to 'Denise' survived and thank her on camera. The report still calls the event a tragedy, which suggests many others did not leave in time.

The film leaves the time travel logic open. It is not clear if 'Denise' fixed her own timeline or created a new one. If she created a new one, another version of her family is still trapped in the past, and the 'Greg' she saved is not the one who died trying to protect her. The house now has framed photos of the dead 'Greg' in front of dinosaurs, and 'Denise' has written a new book titled The End of Oak Street after her old novel about leaving her marriage was lost.

The final scene is a barbecue with 'Jeannette' and her parents, presented as a happy American ending, but it carries that dark question about who was saved and who was left behind.
