Renowned industrialist and polo enthusiast, Sunjay Kapur, former husband of Bollywood star, Karisma Kapoor, will be laid to rest today, June 19, 2025. The businessman, who tragically passed away on June 12, 2025, in London during a polo match, will be bid a final goodbye today in New Delhi. The Kapur-Kapoor family will be attending the funeral, and although it was unconfirmed whether Karisma herself will attend the final rites, she was seen heading out for the funeral this morning, with her and Sunjay’s children, Samaira and Kiaan.
Sunjay Kapur passed away at only 53 years old after suffering a cardiac arrest during a polo match in the UK. While it has not been confirmed yet whether his mortal remains have reached India, his final rites are scheduled to take place today. According to a report by NDTV, Sunjay Kapur will be laid to rest on June 19, 2025, at the Lodhi Road Cremation Ground in New Delhi, scheduled to be held at 5:00 pm.
The late businessman’s funeral was delayed due to legal procedures tied to his U.S. citizenship and mandatory post-mortem protocols in the UK, as confirmed by his father-in-law Ashok Sachdev in an earlier statement to NDTV. The Kapur family is organising a prayer meet in memory of Sunjay Kapur on June 22, 2025, at the Taj Palace Hotel, Delhi, between 4 PM and 5 PM. The family extended their invitation to close friends, associates, and well-wishers through the public statement.
The official note was signed by Sunjay's mother, Rani Surinder Kapur, his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, their children, Safira and Azarias, along with Sunjay's children from his previous marriage to Karisma, Samaira and Kiaan.
While initial reports cited cardiac arrest as the cause of Sunjay Kapur’s death, it was later discovered that a bee sting might have triggered the fatal incident. According to News18 and NewsX, Kapur reportedly inhaled a bee while playing polo in England, which stung him in the throat, causing a severe allergic reaction that led to cardiac arrest.
Witnesses said the 53-year-old businessman left the field after feeling sudden discomfort but soon collapsed. The match was reportedly against a team led by hotelier Jaisal Singh when the tragic accident occurred. His last words were:
“I have swallowed something.”
Strikingly, just hours before his sudden demise, Sunjay had posted a heartfelt condolence message on X (formerly Twitter) for the victims of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, reminding followers of life’s unpredictability. Sunjay died merely hours after the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. His final post read:
“Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour.”
Sunjay Kapur’s prayer meet on June 22, 2025, is expected to draw friends, dignitaries, and industry veterans as they pay their respects.
