Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleFormer Indian cricketer and the President of BCCI, Sourav Ganguly, lovingly called as 'Dada' has many records to his name. He is popularly called the Maharaja of Indian Cricket and is regarded as one of the most successful cricket captains. He led the Indian national team to win the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and reach the final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup.
Apart from his stupendous career, Sourav Ganguly’s personal life too has garnered a lot of media attention in the early 2000s. The ace cricketer, who was married to his childhood sweetheart, Dona, went on to have an affair with actress-turned-politician Nagma. The affair was one of the biggest topics of discussion in the media, which led to several controversies. But despite being smitten with each other, the duo called it off. Let’s look back at the reason leading to their breakup.
In 1997, Sourav Ganguly tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart, Dona Roy, and the couple became parents to their daughter, Sana Ganguly, in 2001. However, in the 2000s, rumours surfaced that Nagma and Sourav Ganguly were more than friends. The duo was often spotted together, and they never even hesitated to pose for pictures together.
Soon, reports of his extramarital affair with Nagma ruled the headlines. It was also reported that Sourav was so smitten by Nagma that he was ready to leave his wife Dona for her. Articles carried news pieces like Sourav was getting a divorce from Dona to marry Nagma. Neither Nagma nor Sourav commented on their relationship.
While Sourav and Nagma’s affair made headlines, his poor on-field performance also drew attention. Sourav faced a lot of backlash for his inconsistency as his career went downward, and people blamed his affair with Nagma as one of the reasons for his falling career. Despite being one of the country's top cricketers, Sourav’s declining career was becoming his biggest concern.
Not just this, the actress too faced a lot of flak over her affair with Sourav Ganguly, and she was blamed for his poor performance. As a result, the duo decided to mutually part ways. Years after the breakup, Nagma indirectly admitted being in a relationship with Sourav and revealed why she parted ways with him. Speaking about the same in an interview with Savvy, Nagma said:
“There was a career at stake, besides other things, so one had to part. One had to weigh a lot of things, rather than be on an ego trip and insist on being together. Whatever one says, nobody has denied anything. As long as there is no denial of each other's existence in each other's life, any person can say anything they want."
In the same interview, Nagma also admitted that she never thought of becoming a reason for the misery of someone she loves. So, in order to stop the backlash around her relationship with Sourav Ganguly, the actress decided to move on in her life. Speaking about the same, she shared:
“When it becomes too much, it starts affecting the interest of one another. Then slowly, though you're supposed to bring happiness to a person's life, you bring misery. Then it's in their best interests to move on."
Many reports also claimed that after Sourav Ganguly’s daughter, Sana was born, he broke up with Nagma. After their breakup, Sourav focussed on his life and his career too went back to track. On the other hand, Nagma is still unmarried at 51.
