Sandra Bullock opens up on how she processed the death of Bryan Randall

Sandra Bullock spoke publicly about the loss of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, during an appearance on the podcast SmartLess with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. Notably, the episode is scheduled to arrive on August 24, 2026.

Bullock discussed the difficult diagnosis that preceded Randall’s death at 57 in August 2023. The photographer had privately battled ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, for three years. According to Bullock, Randall had asked her not to discuss his illness, and she said she respected that request. She explained that she understood why he wanted privacy.

However, she noted that keeping it to herself during the COVID-19 pandemic made the experience isolating, because she carried the burden alone. Bullock said she began grieving him years before he died, as he was sick for roughly half of their time together.

Sandra Bullock described how his presence had faded long before his passing, and that she didn’t fully process it until afterward because daily life kept moving. She recounted that ALS was identified through a lengthy process of elimination that took about a year, involving repeated visits, strength tests, breathing exams, and other assessments.

She added that she approached the situation practically, as she was used to planning around illness after her father’s accidents and her mother’s cancer. She said illness itself did not frighten her, but the challenge was helping two young children navigate it, particularly her daughter who viewed Randall as a father figure.

Bullock said her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the first to know about the diagnosis. Later, Bullock confided in close friends including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, wife of Jason Bateman. She described the combination of physical illness and mental health struggles as something rarely discussed, and called the overall situation extremely difficult.
