Sam Neill revealed how he got to know about his cancer

Sam was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, and he detailed it in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This? In an interview with the Guardian, Sam spoke about his cancer at length. The actor revealed how he learned about it and shared that the shocking news came when he noticed swollen glands during a press conference for Jurassic World Dominion in Los Angeles.

Within weeks, he was taking chemotherapy for stage three blood cancer. To be specific, the actor was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. It was while he was taking treatment for cancer that the actor decided to pen his emotions, which eventually turned into a book. While the treatment was underway, writing came to him as a saviour, giving him a reason to live. Though he wrote the book while getting treated for cancer, the actor refused to call it a cancer book.

“I’m not afraid to die. But it would annoy me. Because I’d really like another decade or two, you know? We’ve built all these lovely terraces, we’ve got these olive trees and cypresses, and I want to be around to see it all mature. And I’ve got my lovely little grandchildren. I want to see them get big. But as for the dying? I couldn’t care less.”

In his cancer memoir interview, Neill spoke about not being able to recognise himself during the chemotherapy. The actor recalled looking in the mirror and seeing himself as a completely different person, with no hair on his head, no eyelashes, and a falling beard on a hospital pillow. At that moment, when he couldn’t even recognise himself, Neill reflected on life and the surprises it throws in the harshest ways.

The first round of chemo didn’t work on him, and then another expensive drug was proposed. At that time, he signed a contract with the drug company that if he was still alive after four months, the treatment would then become free. While taking the CAR T-cell therapy every month, Neill was announced cancer-free as the treatment worked for him. Speaking about being cancer-free, he shared:

“I’m not off the hook as such, but there’s no cancer in my body. I’ve never felt so well or so happy in my life; it was fabulous to taste everything. The wine was glorious, and the food was superb. I swam every day down in my dam, and it was the most marvellous time … I had my family and all the grandchildren. It was just fantastic.”
