Not only one, but Robert Aramayo had his name in two BAFTA awards, one as the Best Actor, beating Hollywood bigwigs including the likes of Timothee Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, and the other as the EE Rising Star. There's no denying the fact that this jaw-dropping win will lead Robert to rise even to greater heights in his career. So, amid his BAFTAs win, let's know everything about him.
Robert Aramayo was born in 1992 in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, to Michael Aramayo and Lisa. His journey with acting began at a young age, and even before he was 10 years old. When he was 7 years old, Robert Aramayo played the role of 'Bugsy Malone' in a Primary school production. He was in Cavendish Primary School. Well, the actor realised later that he had a talent for mimicking people, as he often would be in trouble for impersonating his teachers at that time. By the time he was 10 years old, he joined Hull Truck Youth Theatre and took part in three plays in a year.
In 2011, Robert Aramayo joined Hull's Wyke College and got a place at Juilliard School in New York City. Being there, he played the lead role of 'Alex' in Juilliard's production of Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange. His skills soon grabbed the attention of people, and he ended up bagging a role in the Italian-American production Lost in Florence, his first film role. While being at Juilliard School in New York City, Robert Aramayo got the chance to get advice from Ethan Hawke, which stayed with him. He acknowledged the same while receiving BAFTAs.
Recalling what Ethan said, Robert Aramayo revealed that when the former visited the Juilliard School, he shared advice on longevity as an actor and about protecting self-instrument and avoiding anything that could lead to self-destruction. Ethan Hawke's advice had a great impact on everybody in that room, including Robert, who shared during the BAFTA that it stayed with him forever, and he wanted to meet and thank the former, but he didn't have a chance, leading him to acknowledge the same while he was on the stage receiving an award among all the Hollywood bigwigs. He, gesturing towards the other Hollywood stars in the category of Best Actor, said:
"When I was in school Ethan Hawke came to speak to us at Juillard and he gave an amazing talk on longevity as an actor, protecting your instrument and avoiding self destructive behaviours, it had an incredible impact on every one in that room. So to be in this category with you tonight is incredible. Thank you, Ethan."
After his first role in Lost in Florence, Robert Aramayo's first breakthrough came with his role in the famous Game of Thrones, wherein he played the role of young 'Eddard Stark' in the sixth and seventh seasons. Apart from that, he was seen in Harley and the Davidsons, a Tom Ford film, Nocturnal Animals, and also in the HBO miniseries Lewis and Clark.
Robert also had a role in The Empty Man, The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, and Eternal Beauty. In 2019, Robert Aramayo was offered a role in Netflix's psychological thriller, Behind Her Eyes. He recently made his stage debut with Guess How Much I Love You? Well, addressing the audience at the BAFTA, Robert Aramayo said:
"I absolutely can’t believe this. I can’t believe I’m looking at people like you [Leonardo DiCaprio] never mind that I’m stood here. I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award I really cannot. Everyone in this category blows me away."
Krik Jones directed I Swear, which tells the story of a young man, John Davidson, who had a neurological condition, Tourette's syndrome. In this movie, Robert Aramayo played the role of John Davidson. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Robert Aramayo said that he had no expectations of this movie to be in the award shows, rather all he and the team wanted was to build an authentic story.
In another interview with the BBC, Robert Aramayo revealed that it was a challenging role for him to essay. He also added in the interview that having John Davidson there on the sets and taking his guidance was invaluable. To mention, John Davidson was present at the 79th BAFTA Awards, and his invoulantry outbrust caused a global debate. However, speaking about how challenging the role was for him, Robert Aramayo said to the BBC:
"It was a real challenge, probably the biggest challenge I've done. Having John there and having his guidance and help was invaluable."
