Rani Kapur opened up on the Supreme Court's suggestion of mediation in the real estate dispute case. She lost her son, Sunjay, back in 2025.
It was on April 27, 2026, when the Supreme Court of India issued a notice on a plea which was filed by Rani Kapur. She is the mom of the late businessman, Sunjay Kapur. The real estate case fight is all in the public eye between his current wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, Rani and Sunjay's ex-wife, Karisma Kapoor. The court has indicated that mediation was the solution to the case, and now Rani has opened up about the same.
The Supreme Court observed that Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani, is 80 years old, and that mediation was the way out of the family dispute. The court observed that prolonged litigation at Rani's age would serve very little purpose. Rani had sat down for an interview with the Hindustan Times and had reacted to the judgment. She revealed that at her age, she just wants the truth to come out. In her words:
"I welcome the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s observations and its encouragement of a peaceful resolution. At this stage of my life, I seek only truth, dignity, and the protection of what is rightfully mine and my family’s. I remain ready to participate in any fair and transparent mediation process, while trusting that the courts will ensure justice on the merits.”
Rani's plea was heard by a bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala, who observed that the litigation had started at 80... this is not the age to fight. The Supreme Court observed and directed all parties to resolve the matter amicably rather than engage in a lengthy legal battle. Rani also mentioned that she wanted her family's legacy to be preserved. Justice JB Pardiwala, along with Vijay Bishnoi, said that courtroom battles may not be of anyone's interest. The court suggested going for mediation, it will be a case. Although the court did keep the doors open to all related to the hearing of the matter, a resolution did not come via mediation. In her words:
"This has never been about conflict. It is about restoring fairness, preserving a family legacy, and ensuring that no one is deprived through deception or misuse of trust.”
According to the report, Rani Kapur had sought directions to restrict the respondents from interfering with the estate, all assets, and related affairs. She had also challenged some of the orders that were passed by the Delhi High Court and had argued that the estates were not adequately preserved. Concerns have been raised related to the dissipation of the assets.
For the unversed, the dispute started when Rani had filed the suit, where she had challenged the entire creation of the Rani Kapur Family Trust. She claimed that the trust was structured to remove her from control of her estate, which also includes the Sona Group. Rani had also alleged that after she got a stroke in 2017, Sunjay and others had acted in a way that transferred her assets without her consent. Post Sunjay's death in 2025, the dispute had further escalated as his widow, Priya, his family, including his ex-wife, Karisma, started fighting over asset control of the family and the business. Rani Kapur had clearly challenged that her trust was breached and she was stripped of her assets. Rani had moved the apex court against an order from the Delhi High Court to grant her interim protection.
