Peter Alexander is stepping away from NBC News after nearly 22 years, and the move comes down to both personal and career reasons, according to a source. He has spent 15 years covering the White House and eight years co-anchoring, Saturday Today. Now, he is ready to slow down and try something different. The decision follows years of long work weeks and missed family time, along with limited chances to move into top anchor roles at the network.

Peter Alexander's NBC exit reason was after 22 years, and he missed top anchor roles

Peter Alexander built a strong career at NBC News. He became one of the most recognised faces covering the White House and later took over Saturday Today in 2018 after Craig Melvin moved to weekday duties. At the time, the shift was seen as a step forward for Melvin, but it also meant Alexander stayed in a weekend role. Over the years, key positions at the network were filled. Tom Llamas was brought in to lead Nightly News. Kristin Welker took charge of Meet the Press. Hallie Jackson stepped into Weekend Nightly News. With those roles settled, the path to a top anchor seat became unclear.

A source shared that Alexander had long hoped to reach one of those major positions. With those chances no longer open, he started looking at other options. At the same time, the daily workload continued to grow. Covering major events, travelling often, and working most weekends took a toll. That mix of career limits and personal strain slowly shaped his decision. The source revealed that he wanted something that felt fresh and more manageable.

Peter Alexander's career update after NBC exit and future plans revealed

Peter Alexander confirmed his exit during a live broadcast on Saturday. He spoke openly about how much time he had spent away from home. He also highlighted how constant travel and weekend work had kept him away from home for long stretches. He was quoted as saying:

“I’ve been away from home more than 80 nights in the last seven months. More than 200 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years. So, in this limited window before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me…I’m eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives.”

His next step is expected to be an 11 a.m. weekday anchor role at MS Now, a network that came out of MSNBC after NBC’s restructuring in 2025. The new schedule is expected to give him more time at home while still keeping him on air. NBC News leadership also responded to his departure. According to Variety, Washington Bureau Chief Chloe Arensberg and executive producer, Matt Carluccio shared a message with staff. He was quoted as saying:

“Peter has been a trusted presence with great range across NBC News, and a friend to so many across the Washington Bureau, ‘Today’ and the broader NBC News team. We are grateful for all his contributions and wish him the best.”

NBC did not release an official public statement at the time of reporting. For now, Alexander’s final day at NBC will be Saturday. After more than two decades, he leaves behind a long run of political coverage and weekend hosting, choosing a path that gives him both a new challenge and more time with his family. His decision marks a turning point as he steps away from a long NBC run to explore a new path while staying closer to home.
