Patriot is a highly anticipated Malayalam film of 2026. The high-stakes national security thriller starring Mohanlal and Mammootty is scheduled to hit the theatres on May 1, 2026. It is worth mentioning that Patriot has already created buzz on social media as it marks the historic reunion of Mohanlal and Mammootty, who are all set to share screen space after nearly 18 years. The story of Patriot revolves around 'Dr. Daniel James', a retired Judge Advocate General officer played by Mammootty, who gets falsely accused of secretly collecting confidential political information by using spies. As 'Daniel' tries to prove his innocence, he gets into a covert mission related to national security. In this mission, Col. 'Rahim Naik' (played by Mohanlal) joins 'Daniel'. However, when 'Shakthi Sundaram' (played by Fahadh Faasil) enters the scene, inner conflicts occur.
Recently, Mammootty spoke about his upcoming film, Patriot, at a press meet in Kochi. While big-budget films starring two superstars usually tend to aim for a nationwide audience, Patriot has taken a different route. Mammootty revealed that many might think that the upcoming movie, Patriot, is a pan-Indian film, but it’s not. The film is made for Malayalis. However, Mammooty hoped that the film might eventually find an audience outside Kerala. He called Patriot a game-changer and mentioned that it would set a new standard and open the doors for more big-budget films in the Malayalam film industry. He was quoted as saying:
"This film is made for Malayalis. While we hope it may eventually find an audience outside Kerala, the primary goal was to cater to the people of Kerala, whose cinematic tastes have evolved significantly over the years. This is not a pan-India film… Patriot will be a game-changer. It will set a new standard, and hopefully, open the doors for more big-budget films in Malayalam cinema."
The buzz surrounding Patriot is much higher as two superstars, Mammootty and Mohanlal, are coming together after so many years. A critic wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Big Ms together on screen — always a blockbuster for Malayalees #Patriot worldwide advance has already crossed Rs. 7+ crores & If the reports are positive, storm is coming. If this is the response for a relatively low-hype film… just imagine the storm they could create with a full-fledged, high-hype mass entertainer Mammookka × Lalettan." Another user penned:
"#Patriot will demonstrate that Malayalam cinema can also make a massive canvas film like Hollywood, Bollywood, Kollywood, and Tollywood. #MaheshNarayanan took the script to #Mammootty, the first actor he told the story to.
