#1. Single isn't incomplete

Every child needs both the parents in his/her life. But if for any reason one is absent, then that doesn't make the family incomplete. Sushmita Sen has proved this fact numerous times. She has stated that it is difficult to handle the kids alone but it isn't something that can't be done. With just a little effort, you will be able to do it all.

On being a single mother, she gushed:

“Being a single mother is not easy. It's very romantic, but it's not easy.”

#2. Be honest and upfront with your kids

Honesty is the best policy, especially when it is followed with kids. Children are curious. They have a lot of questions in their minds. Instead of misguiding them or telling them otherwise, tell them the truth in a creative way. Recalling how she handled the situation when Renee asked her about her father, she said:

“One day when Renee came back from school, she asked about her father. Sushmita just smiled and pointed to a Shivling (a representation of Lord Shiva) and told her that was her father.”

#3. Fun is equally important

Discipline is important in life, but so is fun. Be strict when it is needed and sometimes, just let it go. Sushmita herself admitted that she started as a strict mother but had mellowed down now. She makes sure that her daughters are working well in all the spheres of life and reward them with fun-filled vacations.

#4. It's never easy but worth it

Sushmita had to fight for years for her daughter's custody. She made uncountable rounds to the court but she is happy to have the company of her daughters. Being a parent is never easy. Whether it is giving birth to a child, nurturing them, educating them or fighting for them; nothing is a piece of cake. You might question your choices or might even go crazy, but your kid's smile will make you realise that it’s all worth it.

#5. Knowledge is the biggest asset

Marks cannot always depict the knowledge and intelligence that one possesses. Parents often pressurise their kids to score more and fail to check whether their children are actually learning anything or not.

In her letter to Renee, Sushmita stressed on how 'knowledge' is the most important thing. According to her, it is nothing less than an armour which will always protect you.

#6. Let your children dream

Not every child dreams of becoming a doctor, engineer or a teacher. Some aspire to be artists, travellers and even vagabonds. Give your children enough freedom so that they can find their calling. Let them dream big and always be supportive.
